I’m writing this post to help people who wonder what the hell happens to this place (Shopping Cart Disco) on Sunday.

Every Sunday, for the last 3.5 years SCD has posted SL Secrets. SL Secrets is based on the PostSecret concept. Here’s the concept: (as per the ORIGINAL POST dated Aug 2008)

The idea is that I wanted to put together a program like PostSecret, where people send their secrets in on postcards and those cards are published on the web and in books. Many of the things people send in are heartbreaking, uplifting and works of art in their own right. Basically, I wanted to issue the same challenge to the SL community.

So many times people on staff here at SCD have had to have ‘talks’ with you kids about the problems with SL Secrets.

SL Secret is a forum to bare your soul without exposing your identity. Sometimes this is very uncomfortable and if I recall correctly a lot of these secrets that I will show caused a ton of debate, scorn, empathy, and love.

So now that you all know how it is let me tell you exactly how SL Secrets WORKS:

1. Someone gets a hair up their bum and makes a secret. They follow the rules on the upload page and then they upload it. (Please see the disclosure page regarding SL Secrets policy on submissions and ownership and the policy page regarding logs kept for that upload area – I’m not going to explain THAT anymore than I have to, okay?)

Here’s the very important part of that sentence. THEY. Who is “THEY”? They are not SCD staff. I’m sure in the past members of SCD staff have made secrets. I have myself and I have freely admitted which ones they are (and can name them to you if you ask). SCD DOES NOT MAKE ALL THE SECRETS! They are ‘people who make secrets – the general Second Life community. One of the 3-4 thousand people who visit every Sunday!

2. Iris (or Lourdes or me) will post on Sunday what is in the Secret folder. Iris is not really in SL anymore, she sometimes can hang around Plurk. But keep in mind even if she was SHE CANNOT BE THE ALL KNOWER OF EVERYTHING GOSSIP AND SNARK!

2a. If Lourdes posts she will post whatever and expect you all to request them to be taken down unless it’s painfully obvious.

2b. I am usually with my family on the weekends – I spend 40 hours a week on a PC for work and prefer to spend my weekends without hassle – if I post secrets I will post them a la Lourdes style.

2c. I could let Dan post them – then all hell would break loose. But I love you all too much for that.

DO NOT HESITATE TO COME TALK TO SOMEONE ON THE SCD STAFF IF YOU SEE A SECRET THAT IS ABOUT YOU. I even have a contact form here which goes straight to my cell phone! They all have my text if they do not have permission to remove it, the ones that have permission may do so at their discretion.

When requesting secrets be removed keep this in mind: You catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Saying please gets you much more than being nasty will.

BLAMING SHOPPING CART DISCO IS LIKE BLAMING THE CARPET FOR BEING THERE WHEN THE DOG SHITS ON IT. TRUST ME- IF THE CARPET WASNT THERE THE DOG WOULD STILL SHIT IN THAT SAME SPOT. IT IS THE PEOPLE POSTING SECRETS WHO ARE SHITTING ALL OVER SCD, NOT SCD SHITTING ALL OVER ITSELF.
