LL Starts Cleaning Up

Due to the recent XStreetSL and OnRez aquisitions (of which LL will be phasing OnRez out) there has been quite a bit of sweeping done by Linden Lab in order to clean up.

Copyrighted logos and such have been disappearing from XStreetSL, such as this Hello Kitty Backpack whose counterpart is still on OnRez.

Linden Lab did fail to clean up Hello Kitty’s darker counterpart, Chococat, from XStreetSL. I wonder what the difference is to Linden Lab?

This also seems to tell us what happened to Wonderwoman’s logo from the LL-hijacked pictures last week. If you have items on these sites with widely recognized logos or images that weren’t created by you, I think you might find them gone as Linden Lab proceeds with their aquisition. OnRez will disappear entirely.

Oh come on everyone knows that

    Chococat > Hello Kitty :P

Personally, I have never been a big fan of images taken from websites like sanrio, san-x, threadless, deviantart (this happened to my DA account) etc. cut and pasted onto shirts/items since it screams a severe lack of originality to me and it only takes a few seconds to do. Also, I think it’s a lot more fun to draw your own characters/pictures.

When I was starting out I use to make and sell sanrio tinies like chococat and pandapple but have since then lowered their price to 0L on xstreet. My policy now is that if I do make things that have a copyright on it, I give it out for free.

And when (if ever) will they clean up the stuff which has been ripped off by copybot? How typical of LL to look out for the interests of Big Corps ™ and not individual content creators.

  3. AlaskaMetro says:

    Shimere: Exactly.

  4. admin says:

They think they own the residents and residents creations (re: art), they take without asking… it’s like living with really shitty parents.

And yet we soldier on through the abuse…

  5. BlahBlahBlahWhatever says:

@ Shimere. Amen. I guess its because the big corps can, and will, sue LL silly. I think all content creators need to band together and file a clase action lawsuit against LL for continually letting their content be illegally sold and passed around the grid as freebies, thus directly resulting in loss of sales to the original creator. Thats fucking with someones livelihood.

  6. Siddean says:

Bottom line is those images are copyrighted, and the copyright owner has every right to ask LL to take them down if they are discovered. Just as we have the right to ask LL to remove content in the case of theft, via the DMCA process. They aren’t obliged to police us, we have to police ourselves and if we are stolen from, we have to follow up with the appropriate legal action.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they are removing content containing copyrighted images. SL is a great big lawsuit waiting to happen with the rampant abuse of copyrighted RL images and trademarks that happens in here. People think that the RL law doesn’t apply in a virtual world, and they couldn’t be more wrong!

Blah: I’m not a tax specialist, but I think the main flaw with a class action law suit for those that live in the US is that they need to make sure they claimed the income they earn when transferring L to US dollar. Which could open them up to a nice little visit from Uncle Sam.

  8. kesseret says:

@Siddean: Agree exactly with you- that’s not a popular opinion either.
@Misty: I file with Uncle Sam, I’m sure other people do as well.

  9. BlahBlahBlahWhatever says:

I know of people who dont file. Theyre mainly people who have a real job in first life, and SL is just pocket money.

I also know people who sl is their main job and they do file.

People who dont are going to be in deep shit if “uncle sam” ever finds out, especially given the amount of money some are making here.

Funny how theyll jail ya for not paying taxes but murderers are set free.

  10. Aya Pelous says:

You know if these content creators are so creative they would create their own logo, instead of slapping on a Copyrighted image on a item. Good for them for getting rid of the blatant rip offs of Real Life.

  11. Emerald Wynn says:

    Damn.

Second Life is the only place where I can run around in a Hello Kitty shirt and not give a sh*t. Wasn’t it Joanna Coles (Marie Claire) who ranted about women in their 30s running around in Sanrio? Ever since then, I’ve worn my Kimora Lee Simmons ring with a tinge of shame.

    STEP OFF MY INVENTORY, LL!

Maybe they don’t want to mess around with Chococat because he’s . . . chocolate? We are all about diversity here in SL.

Sorry. Bad joke. Stupid comment. I’m leaving.

Eep, first time I saw that LL: Insert foot post… and i say the owner of the pic seriously needs to dmca LL, thats as bad as them taking the clothing textures and giving them out to store owners

  13. Whim says:

omg, not that I see it! I forgot to cash out OnRez! Was I the only one?
