2012 Kicks Off With Charity Drama. Who Knew?

I hardly even know where to start with all this as there are about 20 screenshots and links floating around right now sharing this information. For the purposes of simply being straightforward I’m going to  share this information as it floated across my world yesterday, and let all of you readers draw your own conclusions. Also – if you have links, info etc – as always feel free to drop them in the comments in between any rhetoric of name calling and accusing one another of being alts. THAT BEING SAID…

I’m going to start off by saying that the Props and Pose Fair came to my attention too late to sign up for it as a creator, which I might’ve done. However, when it came to my attention – several people, both FRIEND & FOE warned me off any interest of participation. There were accusations of misuse of money, not paying the charity and shenanigans in general. I only slightly knew of one person involved and I noted this and moved on with my cartoon existence. Honestly, often people get their panties in a bunch and accusations of theft and dishonesty are easy to toss out – yet, I thought it was interesting a lot of people seemed to have reservations.

Yesterday, however, Toast Bard blew the doors of doubt off of this event by posting on plurk a link to a RECEIPT GENERATOR website (why does such a thing exist?) and proving, truly beyond a shadow of a doubt that receipt provided as proof of payment for last year’s event was faked. The image below is a screen cap Toast Bard provided on her plurk timeline and is used with her permission.

Till Hapmouche made a side by side comparison of the provided receipt and the receipt generator template, and  they’re identical. This next image is used with permission of Till Hapmouche, thank you Till.

The avatar in question, regarding this fair and the receipt issue is named Epileptic Dreddmor and/or Sweaty Badger. As these events unfolded yesterday, another event organizer, Evelyn Hartshon stepped up and took control of the situation. The fair has since been closed and Evelyn has posted information on the blog, and is endeavoring to create the transparency incumbent upon an charity event.

You can find updates regarding the situation as it stands and the donation HERE on the blog.

A notice was sent to the group with this as an apology/explanation/what you will.

At this point most of this is fairly straightforward, and I’ll leave editorial commentary to you lot.

Thank you to Evelyn Hartshon for stepping up to deal with the situation and trying to right things.

As an aside, Toast Bard made a donation online yesterday to see what sort of receipt notification would be received.

It looks like this.

She donated instantly and was instantly sent this as a receipt. There was no issue contacting them.

In the shadow of all of this, I’d like to remind everyone – and even suggest you PUT DOWN THE PITCHFORKS AND TORCHES FOR JUST ONE MOMENT YES SET THEM OVER THERE, I PROMISE NO ONE WILL TAKE THEM, that this one event is not indicative of “all charities”. It truly isn’t.

There was a lot of rumbling about “and this is why I don’t give to charities.”

I think that’s sad. So many people work very, VERY hard to create transparency and charity events that are meaningful fundraisers in SL. Kesseret and I had a small fundraiser last year, in memory of our friend Cajsa’s cat who died. Kesseret probably spent two hours between emails and documentation just to donate a couple hundred bucks to an Oregon humane society. Given that experience, I can’t imagine HOW much time and effort putting together a large scale fundraiser would be. I think it’s unfair to color all events with the same brush of doubt and dismay.

I am probably an unlikely person to write this as I’m not a columnist here at SCD but Kesseret is busy and as a poser this is kind of close to my heart. I’d like to leave you with just one more thought as I head out into my day.

“In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.” ~ Anne Frank

My thanks to Till Hapmouche, Mavi Beck and Toast Bard who graciously allowed me to use images they provided.

Thanks for posting this. I wanted too but like you said – tad busy. Lice and thanks. No love not lice Hahahahah

  2. Gidge Uriza says:

I’m good without the lice. THANKS THOUGH!

  3. Evie says:

I appreciate you posting this. I’m taking advice from several people as to which is the best way to transfer the money without having to use paypal. Everything will be posted on the blog :)

  4. Cady says:

I’m confused about something, am I reading the NC wrong, or in her defense of herself did Epileptic Dreddmor say that she’d used the initial $500 for the sim & that she’d paid most than that for the group? As though everyone would think – Oh, well.. at least you took the money under false pretenses for SL? And then that she bought things at the fair so she was also a donator? To what, the group? Maybe I’m not understanding what was being said.

  5. Katey says:

So… she DID donate the money last year and is trying to get receipts, but she promises to donate all of the money in increments?

  6. Mavi says:

Great post, clear and to the point. Thank you.

  7. Evie says:

She used the money for the first fair to save the sim that the HQ for the SECB was on, then she saved up the money and donated it. She has lost the receipt and can’t get hold of the foundation people. She made a fake receipt to get some people off her back about it, which totally backfired on her.
Of course, this is only what she’s told us. I dunno if it’s true or w/e. :(

  8. Evie says:

ooh and Toast’s donation, where did she donate from? I’ll be donating from here http://giving.epilepsyfoundation.org/site/TR/Events/Tributes?pg=fund&fr_id=1060&pxfid=22522

  9. Kat Alderson says:

First and foremost, I believe in charitable giving. in both lives. I’ve participated in a number of events in SL, including the aforementioned fundraiser for the Oregon Humane Society, Relay for Life of Second Life, and the Garden City Relief Fundraiser initiated by Shelly Toonie. There are many noble and honest people in SL, and Kess and Shelly are but two of them.

However, most of the time, I tend to make my donations under my first life name without a lot of fuss. It’s easier, and I know that there will be no delay in getting the funds into the hands of the people who will put them to work.

Although I received an invitation early on, I didn’t participate in this fair. When I asked for specific details and proof of the means of accounting, it was not supplied to my satisfaction. I declined.

It’s great that Evie is trying to put this fair right – she is certainly stepping into a clusterfuck, and that takes courage and stamina. I’ll be happy, on behalf of all the generous and well-meaning creators, as well as on behalf of those suffering to see the charity actually get the money.

It’s very difficult for me to get past the first couple of lines of that notecard. Faking receipts of that nature constitutes fraud. A felony. Last year’s fake receipt? This really, this needs to be reported to LL, to the charity in question, and to the federal authorities.

There is no apology, just an admission of guilt and a lot of excuse-making, which is not the same thing.

  10. Darkley Aeon says:

I was one of the people who said about ‘this is the reason i dont do sl charity’ and this is one of the many reasons I dont go out of my way to support any.
The ‘trying to get receipts out of people’ thing has happened on numerous occaisions, and the ‘how dare you question the integrity of my anonymous internet friend by anoymous internet supporters’ thing has happened many times too.

Unfortunately, people like this spoil it for the honest people.

I dislike SL charity because they tend to be either for charities I dislike, or they are not international enough.

Before people start calling for my head I give regularly in RL to a specific charity, plus my time for another for many many years.

    • Hypatia Callisto says:

      This.

This whole situation is certainly an eye-opening barrel of lulz. But it confirms why I don’t do most SL charity, and I am quite happy to be cynical about melodramatic wastes of skin with a solid case of Munchhausen by Internet.

  11. Cajsa says:

I just got off the phone with the Epilepsy Foundation. They checked for donations under the name Wendy York and found no activity at all in 2011. I gave them the URL so they can read the article themselves. This is very sad because it does increase doubt and suspicion about charitable fundraising in Second Life. The best option, it seems to me, is to approach organizations in advance and ask them to create an avatar that can receive all the donations directly and then withdraw the funds into RL after the event. Another alternative is to find a fiscal sponsor with some charity or foundation that would be willing to receive donations and provide accountability though most fiscal sponsors charge a 5% fee for the time spent in accounting for the activities to comply with state and federal requirements.

  12. Marieke Mayako says:

Designers and all those involved in this Fair should report her to Linden Lab.

  13. Mavi says:

Wow Cajsa, it didn’t take you a whole year to contact them????? ;P

  14. Girl got CHECKED.

She’ll get what’s coming to her.

  15. Michela Benazzi says:

I tried to give Epi/Sweaty a second chance, SHAME ON ME! Even in all that was unveiling, I too went to the site and donated directly. Not only do you get an email, but you get an ‘instant receipt’ from their site. Poor Epi told me when I asked about them, how sick she was and how she was exhausted from her ‘attackers’ and the ‘mob’. Poor Epi, she lied, stole and got caught! Poor Epi my hind end!!! I wonder now if she even has ever had a seizure! Honestly this is a sick individual in many ways.
Lets boil this all down, Taking money from a charity (and under false pretenses) – can we all say “IT IS CRIMINAL EPI!” Don’t worry they have neurologist in jail. Wendy/Epi/Sweaty/Stinky snake in the grass the facts are ISPs do not lie, and you are being reported for investigation. Want to run? Sorry it is too late. You’ve posted too many lies, and will be held responsible for your sick actions.
That being said, I have to back up the person who said being charitable is a value in both worlds. I have participated, given, and even ran some various types of fund raisers. There is a right way and a wrong. The wrong is simply criminal, wrong, and sick in so many ways. I hope that you will not be discouraged to support various organizations, it is the only method of income for several agencies. If you are uncomfortable giving in SL, simply ask for the RL address, phone number, website, and a contact. If its valid the organizer should have this information very easily accessible. I personally am heading up the Ronald McDonald House event coming up within the next month, I can already provide all of this and a direct CEO contact who (and it is not official quite yet) may even be logging in to visit the event. There are so many ways to confirm things in this day in time, it just takes a little effort. I encourage you to seek out those methods, support the valid charities, and don’t let these type of CRIMINALS win.

    • I have to agree with Michela. It’s the year 2012 not the 1970s. There’s no way it takes a year to get a receipt from a charitable organization. This is clear cut fraud on the part of this person and should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. It’s people like these that damage the reputation and the spirit of giving that is so important when raising money for charities. There are many events in SL that are geared towards charities and many charities that gain substantial amounts of money from SL. However, every time another fraud shows up, it makes people that much more leery of donating or participating in the event. It turns people off from donating and I can’t blame them. Not all charitable events are fraudulent but unfortunately these fraudulent events take their toll on the generosity of others.

  16. Sickened and saddened by this whole ordeal. There are wonderful, honest, noble people who will be screwed over because of what this woman did. I commend Evie for stepping up to the plate and trying to fix all the wrongs this woman created. I agree with what was said above. That DOES take courage and stamina. I also hope that someone who understands legal issues can find a way to take action in pressing charges against this woman, as what she did is FRAUD. People go to jail daily for what she did, and I do believe that no crime should go unpunished. Especially when so many innocent people have been dragged into this mess. Some people on this earth just make me so sad inside.

  17. Oy vey.
This whole saga has been almost been too embarrassing to watch. I really have to give kudos to Evelyn, who came into this rising tide of bullshit ready to defend the situation and came out fixing the charity and condemning Epileptic’s actions. I don’t know her outside of plurk, but she’s true blue and you don’t find that on or offline too much these days.
I admit I hadn’t followed the Pose & Prop Fair drama until yesterday when my friends were upset about it and I googled “RECEIPT GENERATOR” and found, well, the obvious. When I read the initial “presentation” of the receipt, I smelled bullshit. Epi moans about having to sell her car, but in a previous post she tells us how that past month was the first one without having a seizure. It isn’t hard to google “Epilepsy and drivers licensure” to realize that there is no way she’d have been able to legally operate a motor vehicle in her home state if her epilepsy is indeed as bad as she says.
I don’t know her, but this is upsetting and I’ve seen the effect of this bullshit on my friends and the whole overall plurk atmosphere. I don’t wish illness on anybody, but after the gaps in her stories and the fact that we know that she’s a liar, it makes one wonder if she truly has the condition she’s been such a “charity” warrior for.

The car thing + false donations + a video someone posted on plurk of Epi dancing around in flashing (NOT epileptic friendly) lights in RL + mountain of lies = bullshit. Conditions aren’t fun identities to play and patronize.

  18. a pissed of props and poses fair designer says:

Here is an image of the flickr photo with all its comments, before she deleted it:
    http://i.imgur.com/wS28y.png

My favorite part is description under the fake receipt. “Thanks to all those who had faith in me all along.”

LOL @ her getting so butthurt about James Schwarz telling her to kill herself. Newsflash: you are not a victim in this situation, grow a tougher skin.

Anyone giving her the slightest benefit of the doubt is naive as fuck.

Evie, you should return the money to the designers. Your damage control is embarassing.

    • Lisanna Lauria says:

I really, really wanted to give the benefice of the doubt to Epi and I did yesterday. Sometimes, bad management and a bit of stupidness can put you in serious troubles. Only, I’m affraid I just can’t anymore. After the fake receipt and this morning notecard filled with bullsh*t and a pinch of guilt for those who raised the very simple question “where is the money going?” I truly believed we’ve all been fooled.

I am, myself, ill from Multiple Sclerosis. I know just oh! too well how much donation is important for any illness as research is our only hope. Rather Epi has epilepsy or not, what she did disgust me. What she’s trying to do by putting guilt on honest people who are trying to find out if the money ever reached the Foundation is disgusting as well. And above anything I’m truly sad the money never reached the Foundation. I will believe it when I’ll see an official receipt and so far it’s not happening.

As an ill person, I’m disgusted.
As a shopper, I feel fooled.
As a designer who participated in the Fair, I’m pissed.

I am reporting this to Linden Lab and I truly wish karma will do its job.

    • All I can say is WOW. What a total scam this person pulled. I totally get the outrage!

BUT I am still bothered by someone leaving a comment for her to end her life and hoping that she dies. I know she did was the equivalent of theft but to say this? I don’t know it just bugs me.

      • I agree with you Elle. I know everyone is stating their disgust and opinion on the situation but spewing “go kill yourself and I hope you die” bugs me as well. I hear too many kids say them same words and many families affected by those same words as well.. but any way…

As a person that suffers from an incurable disease, Sickle Cell Anemia. I understand the importance of donations and when someone fraudently obtains funds in the name of any recognized organization, the best thing to do is report them and hope they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

I was chosen as a blogger for the event but I am sort of happy that I am having computer issues and I am not able to do any type of blogging. I would have hated to have blogged about the event and then had to retrack my post with an apology.

Evie, thanks for stepping up and taking responsibility and I hope all works out. Sometimes Good people have to undo what others have done.

    • Kat Alderson says:

Give the money back to the designers? That’s defrauding the shoppers who believed their hard-earned Lindens were going to support a charitable cause. As a designer, I can sympathize with your outrage. As a shopper, I have to say, when I know a charitable event to be wholly on the level, I often buy more than I would (things which have only a slight interest or attraction for me) to encourage the designers and support the charity.

  19. Rhed Rhode says:

TBH…I had a personal conversation with epi/sweaty after I saw the “receipt” which was linked on someone’s plurk yesterday. I had heard rumors about her and the whereabouts of the donations beforehand but I DO try to give people the benefit of the doubt until I see proof (like the obviously faked receipts) She admitted that the receipt was faked and said she “Made a mistake” And then told me how people in SL “Backed her into a corner of her home” and caused her an anxiety attack at which point she was scared of having a seizure. Honestly it took me several minutes to realize she meant the corner of her SL home…it’s the internet. Feel bullied? Log off. In this situation, I felt it necessary to remove Sweaty from all FTLO groups/future events because I won’t do business with liars, let alone thieves, however, that being said….there are a BOATLOAD of other event coordinators, much larger and more prominent, that have “questionable ethics” when handling “charitable donations”. I think this situation should shine light on their transgressions as well and that designers and donators alike must take the time to thoroughly investigate who they are working with. The first “Charity” I ever discovered in SL was the “make a wish foundation” which had a represenatative in SL…or so they claimed. And there was an event coordinator that raised money for their cause only to discover last minute that this group was raising money “to make dreams of SL children come true”….ie, none of that money was going to benefit the dying children that it was thought to have been generating money for. There have been a BAJILLION of these types of scams, Epi isn’t the first, nor is she the “biggest” or the worst. I really won’t donate to ANY charity on SL unless there is 100% transparency and I think sadly that’s all you really can do. I think it sucks that someone will try to “play the victim” to escape being judged based upon their actions, at this point. She gets what she gets, and Karma’s a wonderful thing.

  20. Blum says:

I commend evie for closing it down and taking charge, but reading that the money shouldnt be donated (by above angry designer) is a bit mind blowing. You went into the fair with the idea in your head that part of the funds would go to a good cause. Epi failed for sure no question. But the money should still go to the right place. The charity itself did nothing wrong and the intention of the entire fair was still to do good. Dont let one bad egg destroy that. I saw the snap of the donated funds, which is roughly about 89 dollars US. Lots of “1L” demo’s and small micro payments were listed on there. If you cant part with 89 dollars between how ever many designers, you are in a sad state anyway.

I’m glad Evie is doing the right thing, I’m proud of toast and jez (who wasnt mentioned) for rallying the troops to get attention on this.

I used to love doing in world charities, but I can say, without a doubt, unless it’s one with lindens backing it, I will no longer do charities in sl.

    • pissed off props and poses fair designer says:

I was in the Props and Poses fair *last* year – the charity money which the receipt is referring to. The money she she stole from me and many others went into her pocketbook, and that is why I am pissed. And I can’t even go back that far in my transaction history to make a claim.

Everybody becomes disenchanted with charity events when shit like this happens. Charities in SL are almost always shopping events where the majority of funds collected are at the expense of designers. Creators give a percentage of each sale to the fundraising total. A selfless act to commit, and I don’t mind doing it, but when organizers have immoral agendas it is obviously discouraging.

      • Blum says:

I agree with you fully, 100%. I was just saying the money that was currently snap shotted should still be donated. Evie took over the account and change the password, it’d currently on paypal. She has linked photos every step of the way. I know its asking a lot to have a little faith but I think she’s doing the b est thing by taking the step to make light of an extremely poor situation.

I to am a designer and I have been in many charities in the past few years, a few of which Ive been burned on. When reciepts arent shown and I know ive earned atleast 1k usd FOR a charity through an event, I always wonder if I’d been had. So yes, I do totally understand. That said if something like this happened, I wouldnt want the charity to suffer, if I knew someone took over to remedy the issue, I personally (cant speak for everyone) wouldnt want my money back, I’d just want to know it went to the area I silently agreed upon by joining the event in the first place.

  21. Dorm says:

Ditto that, no more charity fairs in SL- even WITH “receipts”, even with copies of transaction history, all can be faked, modified, adjusted, and most arent as dumb as the fool in this story. Even her “apology”? is contradictory and senseless, shes a pathological liar, and we only realised because she lies so BADLY- now imagine this scenario with someone a bit more intelligent. Its not difficult. Wed never have known.

Except is Mary the fool, or are we?

  22. Jezibell Thorne says:

From the start this was crazy and it just got worse and worse. I will applaud Evie for her stepping up but lets remember even she took convincing. I dont think anyone should be getting credit as this was we have to remember a sad time. We were proven the worst and now all of us will forever be skeptical of donating, I know I will! I just hope that everyone remembers that not everyone has the ability to donate IRL and SL was a good way to do our part and feel good about it. I think that those giving her sympathy need to reevaluate why, Epi screwed over people for years with her lies about this and it finally became exposed. In the end we all have to try and live a good and true slife and always look over our shoulder when someone is helping out and make sure we are funding a charity and now a bank account and ego.

    • Epileptic Dreddmor says:

Uh, years? Also I never screwed anyone over. Aside from myself. No one is funding my bank account. Unless you count my RL job.

I’m not worried since you and the Tableauid crew will just find someone to attack next. You’re all known trolls with tiny stores and tiny brains. Godspeed to the next person.

  23. Evie says:

I will be donating the money, however, if any designers want the money back they can contact me directly either via email or inworld. I have no problem with giving the money back, it’s just a shame that the charity will loose out on money that shoppers donated via items at the fair.
    Email is hartshon.evelyn@googlemail.com
    Inworld name is Evelyn Hartshon
It will take me a few days for all the transactions to go through, I’m currently trying to figure out the best, quickest and easiest way to do the donation. If anyone has any suggestions please contact me!

I’m not taking any credit for this, I’m doing what I have to do. All info will be posted on the blog http://superheroepilepsycombatbrigade.blogspot.com/

    Thank you for eveyones support.

  24. Cajsa says:

It would be a terrible thing if the result of Sweaty Badger/Epileptic Dreddmor’s actions result in curtailing our support for charitable fundraising in Second Life. I also would hate to see all fundraising limited to RFL – despite all the good it does, there are other important causes as well. The problem is that, too often, the organizers plan the accounting and payment part of the event after the fact, not beforehand. Clearly, before raising funds, someone on the organizing committee must be tasked with contacting the organization to request the organization create their own avatar to receive funds and have that information on the organizational website. If that is not something they wish to do, then a foundation or other charitable organization should be identified and recruited to serve as a sponsor so that no individual is in control of the funds, but only nonprofits who won’t have to pay income taxes on the funds raised and will have a level of public accountability with the IRS and state agencies that individuals do not. A third option would be having the organizing committee hire a CPA firm who would charge a fee to be the recipient and that firm create an avatar. But, I don’t see why most organizations would not be willing to create a free account in the free to use Second Life in order to receive hundreds to thousands of dollars in donations. Many of these events raise $10,000 or more, well worth the time on the part of the charity.

  25. karakara says:

first off what sort of a person is so suspicious they would even consider the receipt a fake to begin with and how did they know to find out and make the comparison. good job they did and all but still that make me question of the chacter of that person to start with.

second off who the fuck sells their real life assets to keep a sim going in god damn game. get a life already

good to see SCD getting back to its roots bring on the drama

    • I think because the receipt looked like it came from a gas station instead of what a real receipt from a charity would look like.
      example: http://images.plurk.com/257d70cecf7e389ff7c64d170f6fe3b6.jpg
or perhaps this one with an offical letterhead from 15 years ago from the same charity:
      http://anapazcakes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Epilepsy-Foundation-of-South-Florida-small.jpg
See even back in 1997 they didnt even use thermal paper receipts. Maybe taco bell LOL also the story about not being able to get in touch with the charity to get a receipt is total BS. Charities are required by law to provide proof of donations so they can be recorded for tax exemptions. The whole thing is sad and though I don’t agree with wishing death on anyone, I understand the anger of being duped by someone using your sympathy to steal from you. Karma comes back and I’m hoping it comes from Federal authorities dragging her out of her house into the yard in cuffs.

    • Hypatia Callisto says:

There is nothing wrong with the character of the person who questions questionable shit.

There is something wrong with being so gullible about people jerking your emotions around for their own satisfaction and greed, though. I have thought for quite some time that people make a big song and dance about the charity stuff in SL because they feel guilty about spending so much time in a video game.

Here… some advice. Turn the virtual world off for a little bit, and go donate some time and money to a charity IRL (and check them out too, as not all charities IRL are putting the money to good causes, either.)

I worked nonprofit IRL, this is why I am so cynical about it. I have seen human nature at play a few too many times, in rather ugly ways.

Remember that people can be greedy worthless jerks, and when there’s an opportunity to be a narcissistic crook, some people will always jump at the chance. There is nothing wrong with the person who follows “trust, but verify”. There is something wrong with the person who tells the person who verifies that they were wrong to do so, while pumping their chests for attention.

Just an update regarding the situation with the current funds that I am in charge of for the 2012 fair.

I have emailed the American Epilepsy Foundation regarding the situation. I explained what’s happened and gave them the link to this post. I also asked if they would put some form of information about the event on their website, to show that I have been in touch with them and that the email pic I posted on the blog isn’t fake. I also suggested that they should create an avatar within Second Life to represent them.

I sent the email half hour or so ago, so I doubt I’ll get a reply straight away. If/ when I do get a reply I will update everyone. If I don’t get a reply I will continue with the process.

I’ve posted the pic of the email on the blog, plurk and on flickr. I have blocked out my rl details and the names of my google contacts.
    Link – http://superheroepilepsycombatbrigade.blogspot.com/2012/01/donation-enquiry-sent-to-epilepsy.html

I know that some folks are dubious about me and if you can trust me etc, and after what happened with Epi, I don’t really blame you. I just hope that everything I post on the blog, all the info I share etc regarding this will ease your minds a little.

Also, please don’t let what happened with this event effect other events in SL. Please consider donating to the charities online if you’d rather avoid the SL events :)

    Thanks <3

  28. Clark Bowenford says:

I’m pretty disappointed with this situation. It does make it horrible for anyone wanting to participate in raising any kind of awareness or any organization that wants to have a presence in SL. In December, I found out that an RL friend had a serious medical condition with no insurance and the thought crossed my mind to reach out to SL people to maybe raise money for this friend. Boy, am I glad I didn’t pursue it any further than I did! And that’s really unfortunate that I can say that with a little relief. I’ve spoken to Epi in SL in the past and had her on my friend list up until yesterday. She always seemed quirky and funny but I had no idea how far the rabbit hole went with this gal and unfriended her immediately. I can’t allow having someone who would, pretty much, mock a charitable organization to profit for herself. It’s despicable and frankly, as far as Epi’s in-world existence is concerned, I think she could take some advice from Mr. Schwarz and just end it.

As far as Evie’s efforts go, I applaud her. I realize that not everyone is pleased with how damage control’s course of action has gone, but given the situation, I think Evie’s doing a great job and no one should give her any grief but should try to support her efforts right now. “Spread Love”

    Claims he has fans
Spends all his free time playing with his 7 sims.

    • Irony: it doesn’t mean what you think it means.

Way to go, hiding behind a name to attack others with. It’s really big of you.

    • But I DO have fans, and you’re the biggest one!

      Stay pressed and obsessed, GirlFRANd.

      Keep them coming.

    • Dear Irony is,

What’s funny is nothing you are saying is truly Ironic. If anything they are more contradictions but have an overreaching stupid appeal to them. So I thought I would shine some light on how stupid you are.

Many people think Noh8 was about anti bulling. Well it wasn’t. Noh8 was made for one real reason and that was to show support against California’s prop 8. It has nothing to do with bulling or being nice or acting like a hippy pretending to love everyone. It strictly has to do with supporting the rights of the queer community to get married.

James, unlike what you have stated, never came out and used the words “Fag” or “Dyke”. I have never heard him or seen him say anything negative about the queer community. Therefore, the purpose of his Noh8 picture really has nothing to do with James telling someone they should go kill themselves for stealing 500 usd that was to go to a charity but instead went into her pocket.

If James was to take part of pink shirt day or purple shirt, which I am sure he didn’t, you’re points would be valid. But knowing you by your statements, you could care less that trusting people got scammed out of their money. You should go play freeze tag with on coming traffic. Noh8.

      • So, basically, it’s OK to tell people to go kill themselves over $500, and it’s OK to be a bully so long as you never claimed to be anti-bullying. You’re aware that you’re just making your buddy sound worse with this kind of defense, right?

I mean, obviously stealing and lying are a whole other level of wrongness, but to be honest this chick seems so inept at the actual business of being a scammer that she’s either mentally ill or pathologically stupid. Either way, pity is a more appropriate response than vitriol. Just AR her for fraud and move on.

      • Irony is... says:

I’ll make sure to let Matthew Shepard know that NOH8 isn’t about bullying.

  32. Draco Nacht says:

I keep thinking that with a $5 donation and Photoshop, she could’ve avoided all of this.

And that is why I’ll never be Treasurer :(

  33. Epileptic Dreddmor says:

    Hi. It’s me.

I thought long and hard about commenting on here but since I’ve had two people tell me to go kill myself, I think I’ll go ahead and have my say. That, and despite all the speculation out there, only I really know what happened.

    1) If I thought the Lindens would do anything about it, I would AR James Schwarz and Clark Bowensford for their advice to me to go kill myself.

2)I was NOT trapped in my SL house. When I said I was backed into a corner I did not mean that literally. I kept trying to communicate to the people yelling and making fun of me on voice (Jezibell Thorne, Ocatgons Yazimoto being the main ones) that I couldn’t type. At one point someone suggested I turn off the sound on my computer and I did so. Then was chastised for that. Despite the situation, people had no right to take up a mob mentality and fill the sim just to watch a show. I find it hideous that people will fill a sim to watch people bully and attack someone but they won’t come fill the sim to donate money to the International League of Epilepsy (not the American Epilepsy Foundation because I realize there are people who are NOT in the US who have Epilepsy.)

I DID NOT SELL MY CAR JUST TO SAVE THE SIM. I sold my car a few months ago and used part of that money since I had it at the time. I have apologized for the fake receipt on numerous occasions to numerous people. I owned up to it when asked about it. No money ever went into my pocket book. I would be a horrible human being if I exploited the illness I have had to live with for 30 years for 500 dollars. Plus, it makes no sense.

I would like to point out that Evie has done a wonderful job. I really appreciate her handling this. I have appreciated her and other people who have generously helped out all along the way. Yet, I would like to point out that had I not IM’d her with the password to the donation avatar then it would have remained in my possession (AND STILL GOTTEN DONATED.)

When I first started doing all of this, I did ask LL for help and they declined to do so. I was not aware they provided avatars for charitable donations. Before I had any fundraiser at all, I tried to find some way to get a presence from the Epilepsy Foundation in SL. When you are in the midst of trying to salvage something that means a great deal to you, sometimes all you see is the immediate situation and clamor to salvage it.

At this point, I am still open to anyone who needs support regarding Epilepsy. Most of what I have done in regard to my endeavor has involved awareness and support of those who came to me. I lent an ear and they did so in return.

Just because you can screencap doesn’t make you a hero. It makes you able to push a button. I made a mistake but the things I have endeavored to do both IRL and on SL far outweigh my mistake. Also, for those who called the Epilepsy Foundation looking for Wendy York…that is not my legal name. I go by Wendy York day to day but the last name I used for legal transactions and paperwork is another one. I am not revealing that name after all of the wasted time commenting on blogs, forums, sending me nasty IM’s, etc. Thanks to those who made a donation via the site. I have always encouraged that. Epileptic Dreddmor, the avatar I used to use in fact has a profile pick tab leading you to where to donate directly. After all the bullying I received last year, I put that in there and have advised people to donate directly. It’s the best way, even if it’s like five dollars.

I’m not going to try to change what you think of me but if you actually took the time to know me, you’d know I was an honest person who does not steal. My RL is dedicated to helping others as well. Again, thank you to those of you who have realized I’m not the big monster people make me out to be.
I hope at least a few of you took time to educate yourselves regarding Epilepsy as that is what anything I have ever done has been about.

      But you do lie. Repeatedly.

I’m glad Evie’s here to fix the clusterfuck, and I really wish you would stop doing your damndest to undo the hard work she’s doing.

      • Epileptic Dreddmor says:

How am I trying to undo it?

I gave her the donation avatar.

I gave her appreciation and credit.

And I don’t even know you so don’t even try to hide in your glass house.

        • Coyote Momiji says:

“Glass house” implies I’ve tried to pull the same shit you have. I haven’t.

I haven’t falsified evidence. I haven’t stolen money. I’ve never even tried to do either.

You keep talking and pissing people off, more and more. You keep acting as though you’ve apologised, but an apology implies there’s actual sorrow and change involved, and you keep saying the same damned thing.

          Stop. Seriously. Just stop.

          • Epileptic Dreddmor says:

            I have actually apologized.

            • Coyote Momiji says:

              *sigh*

              • Coyote Momiji says:

Additionally, I note you didn’t address the other parts of my statement.

                Honest people don’t fake shit.

    • Kat Alderson says:

      Epileptic Dreddmor:

You committed felony fraud when you created fake receipts to indicated you donated the collected money to charity, when you had not done so. But you’re honest?

You accuse the very people you defrauded of being bullies, but you’re a good person?

You’re just misunderstood, and the whole rest of the world is mean and in a conspiracy against you?

Really? Do you really think you’re fooling anyone?

    • Jezibell Thorne says:

FIrst off sweetie, I never made fun of you. I may have made a sarcastic remark or two but I never full on bullied you nor would i ever. For you to sit here and insult the intelligence of everyone here is disgusting. You fucked up the moment you sent me that receipt t and thought it would go unnoticed. You told us to google you in your post, we did and may I say I love the Pooh tatt you have on your breast… See that would be mean but at this point I could care less, you have a rotten heart and did and have taken from charities, lives and overall trust in SL. I hope that you are pleased with yourself and can one day be ok with who is looking you back in the mirror. Lastly, I will state that you are also one who has stolen ideas from people and made them your own… So why would anyone even think to trust you.. Anyways, love and light.

    • Cajsa says:

Please just stop trying to defend the indefensible and stop lying. Your fake receipt was for the American Epilepsy Foundation and you informed the group that they were raising money for that foundation and Evie is going through hoops trying to make an international donation to that foundation, so claiming that you gave to another foundation is just one more in a long, long series of lies. People have your real life Facebook and have graciously not made it public, so we know your other claim is a lie as well. All you are doing is piling lies on top of lies on top of lies and the more you do this, the more you discredit charitable work in Second Life. If you gave an ounce of a damn about the Epilepsy Foundation, you would shut the hell up and stop dragging this out with whining about how hard done by you are. You would shut up and let this die down and go away so that people are not reminded again and again and again how big a liar you are, particularly with your new lies added to your old lies.

Do you read the comments from people saying they will never participate in another fundraiser in Second Life ever again.? Do you see the people saying they will not contribute to any more charities in Second Life? You did that, you lying, cheating thief. Now, I don’t think it is helpful for people to tell you to go kill yourself, but I do think it is time for you to kill your avatars and spend some time searching your heart for some shame and regret. Perhaps when you can make an apology that is not accompanied by whining excuses and complaints about the horrible injustice of being caught, people might be willing to listen. Until then, I suggest you shut the hell up.

    • Clark Bowenford says:

I didn’t say kill yourself. I said kill your in-world existence. BIG difference.

      • Clark Bowenford says:

And by all means, keep digging that hole deeper. Sit down. No one could give two shits what your side of the story is at this point because you’ve proved yourself to be a liar and a thief. SORRY I THINK YOUR DOLL SHOULDN’T EXIST IN SL ANYMORE. You ruined that on your own.

    • Lamie says:

So you are the victim here? seriously?

    • Reading all of your justifications, this is what springs to mind. You’ve got chocolate all over your face but despite all the evidence, you didn’t eat any.

  38. karakara says:

    lets try a different approach.

Epileptic Dreddmor are willing to say/type right here and now that you DID pay that 500US Dollars to the foundation. Can you confirm your side of the story is, you paid it and you lost the receipt, people got upset, started to bully you until you reached the point that to make it all go away you faked the receipt to shut them up?

    Or

You fucked up spent the money, sold your car, paid the charity etc

either way you say you paid it right?

    Please just a straight answer
    thanks

    • Epileptic Dreddmor says:

Yes. I paid it. I’m paying more in increments as I can afford it so I can have proof of it and to help Epilepsy research. I did fake the receipt, which I never denied. I did fake it so I could get Octagons Yazimoto and Edith Ogleby/Madiene Falconer to stop harassing me. If they had any doubts about me, I wish they would have aired them the minute they had them, which apparently was long before they decided to vacate the Syndicate and anything or anyone involved with it.

I sold my car a few months ago because I didn’t need it when I moved to where I live. I ride my bike in the summer and it was a small car so it just sat around in the intense winters we have. I used part of those proceeds to pay the money back (which I used to pay rent on a sim called Mystical Beach because I wanted a place for people to go for support. The money never went into my pockets. It went straight into the pockets of the SL company who own that sim. Since people find me so interesting as to find any information on me they can and wave it in the air, I confirm that I did purchase an SLR camera as I am a photographer in RL. I also put some in my savings so I could use it to travel to see my RL best friend for his birthday, where I used to live. I’ve used the rest to put toward my many medical bills. FYI: the car sold for $8000 which barely put a dent in my medical bills that have accumulated over the years.)

People seem to forget that I did not steal anything or do anything with the money from the fair for this year. I immediately turned the donation avatar over to Evelyn Hartshon. I also told her I did not want access to said avatar after she donated the money. I am especially sorry to Evie and the people who kindly participated in any event or endeavor I have been part of. Not because I was caught…but because I am not proud of my actions. I do have a good soul and heart. I know that and that’s what matters.
I am trying to get on with my life and really wish people would find something more productive to do. It’s over.

As I said, please send me a notecard inworld if you would like to say something to me or point something out.

      Thank you.

      • Cajsa says:

Just stop already. Every word you say just damages charitable fundraising more and more. If you don’t stop, no one will ever be able to raise a penny for anything. You are hurting your cause with every syllable you express. The only thing you can do to serve the cause of epilepsy is to stop digging the hole.

      • Clark Bowenford says:

“Yes. I paid it. I’m paying more in increments as I can afford it so I can have proof of it and to help Epilepsy research.”

You paid it…. but you’re paying more so you have proof. You just said that. Seriously, that makes no sense. If you paid it, you shouldn’t HAVE to be paying more to have any proof.

“I used part of those proceeds to pay the money back (which I used to pay rent on a sim called Mystical Beach because I wanted a place for people to go for support.”

You fail to understand that the money should’ve NEVER gone towards a sim. Period. Donating back to SL is not what the deal was. Donating to Epilepsy research was the deal.

Lemme put it in these terms:
So, I’m a little granny. I give my granddaughter $200 to go get my medication. Instead, she goes to the mall and buys me a fur coat. Yeah, the fur coat’s nice, but the fuck are my pills? Why would she spend the money on something I assumed she’d spend on what she was supposed to? Misappropriation of funds.

misappropriation n. the intentional, illegal use of the property or funds of another person for one’s own use or other unauthorized purpose, particularly by a public official, a trustee of a trust, an executor or administrator of a dead person’s estate, or by any person with a responsibility to care for and protect another’s assets (a fiduciary duty). It is a felony (a crime punishable by a prison sentence). (See: fiduciary, embezzlement, theft, larceny)

        STILL THEFT.

“FYI: the car sold for $8000 which barely put a dent in my medical bills that have accumulated over the years.”

Prove it. That’s an awful lot of money for a used small car.

“People seem to forget that I did not steal anything or do anything with the money from the fair for this year. I immediately turned the donation avatar over to Evelyn Hartshon.”

YEAH BECAUSE YOU STOLE LAST YEAR AND GOT CAUGHT!! What other option did you have to save the tiniest bit of skin on your face.

You talk in circles and WHY you even keep coming back to try and spin the same loose, sad, false story is beyond everyone, dude. Kill all your SL AV’s, forget about SL. Go play Skyrim or WoW because you’ve pretty much worn out your welcome with the rest of Second Life.

  39. karakara says:

and anotheer thing, all this talk of felon fraud, why do americans always have to throw this shit around. its a minor matter at best it could be settled in civil court, the foundation already said they have no intention of following up so NOTHING is going to happen over this.

just a whole lot of people enjoying another another shitfest cluster fuck and a chance to look hollier than thou

I’m not sayd Epileptic that you don’t look bad, you do, it looks very very dodgy to say the least. but at the end of the day someone ripped some people off over 500bucks, nothing will come of it. Best you can do is quit SL, create an alt whatever. get on with your life and forget it

  40. lalu says:

a little advice to Epi to make things right:
    1) give up all SL activity: sell your land, downgrade to basic account etc. until ..
    2) you saved up 500US$ and donate it with receipt and backup from a 3rd party (even if you already donated 500 US$).
    3) then you can return to SL but stay away from any charity activity.
and 4) use your time and money in RL projects to help your cause.

    • Epileptic Dreddmor says:

I have stated that I am going to pay it in increments as I can afford to. I just started a new RL job so it will take awhile to save up the 500 USD in bulk. At this point, I am keeping my Epilepsy Awareness efforts to RL. ( Don’t worry! It’s just education! ) I am not claiming I am a victim. I stated I was not a victim and nor will I ever be.

I am sorry this all happened. Not that I got caught…that I didn’t know how to do charity in SL in the first place; that people love to get in on a good piece of drama; that people won’t stop spending their time chit chatting about me, calling me names and wagging fingers.

I’m not sorry that I have more than one avatar. There are people on here who have much more than I do. If I didn’t tell my friends about one or all of them it’s due to either a)slander from someone in SL who is actually mentally ill or b) it doesn’t effing matter. Also, most of the av’s I have used, including my original one, are canceled accounts because I left SL for awhile due to illness. I did not foresee coming back. When I did, it was because of people’s ignorance regarding Epilepsy. (Everyone please take time out of bashing me and maybe spend that time educating yourselves about Epilepsy. Or something else you don’t know about that might enhance your life. Trust me, for all of the name-calling and hurtful comments I have been the target of, I have beat myself up ten-fold more. I never asked to be called a hero and don’t consider myself one. I never did.) If everyone who had more than one avatar was a liar and stole money then I think 99.9% of SL would be guilty.

I’m not even going to get into anything else because people are just spending time becoming part of a mob mentality and using the situation to get attention for themselves as well. I wish it would all stop and people would just move on. I will not be commenting on anything anymore as I just get attacked more and I never wished to perpetuate the situation. I will be keeping screenshots of my donations when I start them so if you wish to know about them, just send me a notecard inworld please.

With all that said, I’m going to go live a quiet life on SL and keep on with my RL.

      • Clark Bowenford says:

The misappropriation of funds is stealing money or other property that was entrusted to the perpetrator but is owned by someone else, who is the victim. It is the intentional, illegal use of the property by an unauthorized person, particularly by a public official, a trustee, the executor of an estate, or by anyone who has a fiduciary duty and responsibility for someone else’s funds or property. Sometimes misappropriation is referred to as theft or embezzlement, or larceny, or fiduciary fraud.
Misappropriation is also the illegal diversion of money by Forging Documents, or otherwise misleading the beneficiaries and owners of the funds. Misappropriation is a felony crime punishable by imprisonment. In general, misappropriation results in charges of embezzlement. The charges will depend on the type of trust that was assumed or understood as well as the total amount embezzled. Each state also has the right to determine their own specific penalties for embezzlement, however embezzlement from the elderly, from individuals with special needs or from public accounts by elected, employed or appointed officials tend to carry the most significant penalties. When someone is charged with embezzlement or misappropriation of funds, a criminal defense attorney should be consulted to ensure proper representation.
        (from criminaldefenselawyer.com)

        • karakara says:

cept that’s not going to happen is it, no one is being charged with anything so quit with legal craptrap. I dunno what it is with americans do you think it impresses people to chuck this shit around. no one really gives a fuck about a piddly 500bucks, they give a fuck about the principal here and how bad it makes SL look.

          • Clark Bowenford says:

I don’t know what it is with you non-Americans that have to go on about Americans. The principle here, if you could really speak English well, is to make the point that it’s stealing, regardless of what legal repercussions will or won’t come of it.

          • Clark Bowenford says:

Also, the people that spend their time making things for an event that was supposed to help people with an illness and to raise awareness and the people that actually spent their money in-world with the intention of it going somewhere other than a land holding company in SL are the people that give a fuck about where that money’s going. It’s a matter of integrity.

We’re all guilty of hiding our real life personas behind our avatars. I’m sure a lot of us, myself included, have told lies in SL for varying reasons whether it’s to ward off a creepy dude that wants “teh sex” or just to maintain a role-play persona that you’ve built your virtual world around,so yeah, it happens.

And it sucks when people get hurt because of actions you’ve inflicted. The wound cuts deeper when, not only people’s hearts, but their hard earned money and their precious time is involved. To slight that just speaks of your own integrity and to insult the people trying to make others aware of things that should not be happening is ignorant. If the comments here bother you so much, why do you keep coming back? Just to insult Americans? Good job. Dunno where you’re from, but really… no one cares. The legalese is to make aware the gravity of the situation, that if anything REALLY COULD be done other than having someone banned from LL (Which we all know doesn’t amount to a hill of beans) and if this was being done at, say, the local mall, she would be arrested and sued by the foundation she’s representing and frankly, I really hope there’s a way that can happen.

            • Anonymous says:

          • Arya Markova says:

Oh the principle of the matter has been well covered, as well as the repercussions in SL due to her actions. I think people are going on about the legalities of it because she has is still maintaining that she’s done nothing wrong (save forging the receipt) and continues to make irrelevant excuses for her many wrongdoings. Sometimes pointing out legal, RL consequences is the only way to get through to people.

Though frankly, this person is clearly a sociopath and really no explanation in the world will actually make her think that she was anything but justified in taking the money for whatever purposes she saw fit. We’re just shouting at a brick wall at this point.

wow, so its not only the last year’s 500 US$ but this year also around 250 US$ are already missing…
Epi sent group-notice that already around 350 US$ have been collected (which would fit last years amount with more than half time of the fair) , later after the first accusations she claimed only 200 US$ are collected, and now that Evie took over the charity av account only a bit less than 100 US$ are on it…
and 4 days of pose fair and only 100 US$ sounds really not enough…

Evie defo should also publish all transaction history of the charity av … and Epi should make it 750 US$ for donation, not 500…

      • Viten says:

The more i think of it, there is no way 4 days of fair only generated 100 US$

Sweaty made two transactions, 500L$ on the 18th December and I’ve been told (by a donor that wishes to remain anonymous) that Sweaty gave them the 500L$ as a Christmas gift. They have told me that they will donate 100L$ to the Epilepsy Foundation directly and provide a receipt as evidence for the blog.
There is also a transaction for 1400L$ made by Sweaty, I don’t know what it was used for and she didn’t reply to my IM.
I made three transactions. The first was 587L$ to one of the designers (she asked for her money back), the second was to test the VirWox transfer machine and the third was the transfer from the donation av account to mine so that I could start the paypal transfer.

It’s all explained on the blog post.

The final donation has been made. I’m just waiting for the money to leave my bank account. It needs to convert from £ to $, plus it’s the weekend, so it might take longer to process than it usually would.
