The cache.
Stroker Serpentine alerted me to a very messy situation this evening involving a huge cache of stolen goods.
This particular cache of stolen goods was being passed around at Burning Life, supposedly by an avatar named Damen Hax. Each item is retaining the original creator name and information, but is transferable. Many items include a blank box beside it, which indicates use of an exploit.
I also contacted Concierge Live Chat immediately and they told me to file an AR. I told them I had. I also contacted a friendly Linden who forwarded the info on to the appropriate channels. It has been over four hours now and the item has not been blacklisted yet. So, I did not receive the expeditious treatment that Rebel Hope did. I tried my best. Maybe it’s the lawsuit, I don’t know.
What follows is sickening. I opened the box and found that it contained boxes inside boxes inside boxes. I began to document each box, it’s creators and the stolen items inside. I teleported Tenshi over to where I had began unpacking and she was also sick to her stomach. Here is a partial list of the copyable items I found by creator. I will have someone inventory them all at some point, but frankly I had to stop because it was so disheartening.
Akeyo animations inside of notecards, inside of a box, inside of a box.
I myself contacted a Linden or two but … these items, having the original creator on the name, still retain the original creator’s UUID for that particular item. Blacklisting is not really an option here. The Lindens I spoke with simply suggested AR’s, creating a paper trail.
Stiletto Moody, Armidi, ::69::, Akeyo, and many other creators were victimized.
There is also a partial list of content creators here that need to please come to Rebel Hope’s skybox at 4am SLT to identify their stolen goods. These items were passed to me, by Stroker, so that I could rez them and display them for those creators that need to come identify, AR, and DMCA as necessary. I’m not even sure at this point if a DMCA is possible. It’s not copybot. I do suggest bringing in a friend running the Emerald viewer so that you can view the last object owner before me. Rebel Hope and RH Engel, out of the generosity of their dear hearts, will have an area open from 4am SLT until 8pm SLT tomorrow for review. Creators need to contact Rebel Hope or RH Engel for access. Please drop them a notecard and they will get with you as soon as possible.

Here are the names of the “suspects” that had attached hair to prims, prim clothing to prims, copybotted shoes, changed perms on items of mine that I KNOW were never released full perm…and whom have used the notecard exploit to send animations. And yes, the notecards d/l the anims right to your inventory. The list is growing, but here are what I have so far. Without exception they are all NPIOF.

Something this flagrant and the Lindens won't act? That means there is no real hope for the Lindens to act at all.
I'm fairly sure the Lindens don't know what to do. We need to get together and provide them with problems, and possible solutions to those problems.
Creator of the Open Source ReSource, someone giving out free open source content(not just scripts) for years now, someone owning a good chunk of SL land, throwing it all away just to spread a box of freebies?.. Please tell me people are smarter than this.

That's again a new quality of content theft, original creators still show up (same UUID) so the stuff cannot even be blacklisted (which LL obviously doesn't do anyways except once a year). That more or less means there is no way to get rid again of the stolen content. So we basically can give up. Everyone in SL has to know from the very beginning that (if one is successful) ones stuff will be available for free at some point.
mirai Jun (Ce Cubic effect) btw already has left SL (didn't log on since 6 months) out of frustration of being copied all the time, not only 'physically' (copyboted) but also 'content wise' (people stealing his ideas and re-building his designs).
It is my belief Damen is being slandered. He is a friend and I can't see him doing what he is accused of. He is the owner of the open source resource so anyone with half a brain could have purposely or unintentionally put a bunch of freebies into one of his full perm boxes and implicated him. Paper trail? To what….a guy who has given away more of his own free scripts than most of you will ever own in all the items you will buy in your entire SL?

Yeah, I'm adding the "no more accepting freebies except from the original creator" to my list of things to do to try to help. I also don't buy from anyone but the original creator, and I'm no longer participating in hunts in SL, either, unless I know the organizer.
I see Zbornak's name on the suspect list, and i cannot believe she would do such a thing either. I believe this new version of NeilLife may possibly allows creator spoofing. Even more scary, it seems to be able to rip scripts too. So future copybot investigations will be a lot harder.
All custom viewers have those options its not only neillife but cryolife , vlife , thuglyfe, HXO ,Chocolatesl Onyx viewer and much more .They all have NC injection .This expliot has been around for years now it was reported why didnt SL do something ?

Zbornak!! WHAT! Zbornak has a very public SL profile, she's very active and Stroker should apologize to her just as he did to Damen! I remember that she used to manage a club and a mall with big name brands, she knows so many designers and omg I can't believe this at all. At all
I only know Damen from the scripting groups, but I can't believe someone who's put so much in the way of resources and his time and expertise into helping people in SL would be involved in something like this.

I've been told that it is possible that someone used a full perm object that I created to forge my name into those objects… I don't know how that works though… but I also had my account hacked into recently (I only found out when I got MAC banned without me doing anything, and I'm still waiting from a reply from Linden Labs)… so I guess anything is possible. I'm very upset to see my name associated with this kind of thing. Very, very upset.
I don't have anything from Shiny Things with full perms in my inventory, it's all no modify no transfer. so I have no idea how this kind of thing is possible, how my name is there, and how it got into those boxes. I'm crushed and if this is happening to me, you can believe it can happen to anybody. Other innocent people might be hurt.
I tend to agree that Damen wouldn't likely trash his SL presence. However, there are 2 boxes full of stolen content with his name on them. It has to be AR'd that way. Typically, these asshats use alts. Either way, lets hope LL does a THOROUGH investigation.

I wonder if this will galvanize the Lindens to go forward boldly with their new program to register and curb the third-party viewers. These people put up a HUGE fuss on the forums when asked to register and show their code to the Lindens (gasp, what a horror in an "open" source program! lol) but despite all their screaming about technical impossibilities due to the analog hole blah blah, whitelisting and showing one's good-faith efforts not to destroy the economy would help consumer confidence.
Tenshi and all those other girls who so fan Emerald Life in the Concierge need to follow the DNA trail between Emerald and all these other viewers, and not be so dazzled by all their fabulous features not to ask whether they help create the climate of impunity, and whether in fact they are responsible directly, before, during, and after Emerald's development, for these rogue viewers — especially given that key Emerald devs are all so new with 30-60 accounts only. I just talked to Stroker Serpentine who showed me a snapshot that pictures a box that has me listed as the creator. That Box is full perm and apparently it has full permed Shiny things Stuff in it (that do NOT have me as the creator. I don't create many things, but to people who buy my stuff on Xstreet I give out full perm freebies sometimes (like mexican sombrero hats) Apparently anyone could just use one of my full perm boxes to save all that stolen stuff in them!!! This is outrageous!! Worse than I thought! All people need is one full perm prim with your name on it to do this kind of damage to a person! You people should accuse anyone before you know to what extent things can be manipulated and spoofed and before LL gives you a specific list of people who were truly involved in this!!!!

Also LL knew about the notecard exploit for months when a popular third party viewer could be easily modified with a few lines of code to enable it.

I have known Damen Hax for a while but would never think that he would go as far as to do this to content creators. I am a content creator myself and I known for a while he does use neillife. Yet, he says he is not guilty, I have chat logs of him saying he uses neillife client. If you want I can post the pictures.
Unreal, I'd never have thought you to talk absolute rubbish. I've never seen or used the neillife viewer & have never told a single soul that I have, not even as a joke.
The only interaction I've ever had with LordGregGreg was regarding how his PAR plugins fail (aside from some floating text item) & people in my groups were asking me for solutions.. to save his time I asked him myself, at which point he tells me to use emerald client instead as PAR is no longer continuing the project.. Which i then conveyed onto many others.. which i said i would do. The introduction of your BS about some client that's never touched any of my computers.. leaves me no choice but to know more about you & your goals, your methodology & intent for the open source community.
LordG is a core developer in the emerald client team, if this is the type of person that has say in their team.. fabricating to get what you want.. I will be recommending to anyone that asks.. it is no longer trusted; regardless of how many are in the team. Lapse of memory is not acceptable.

Ive never heard of open source resource so cant chime in but he seems to have people backing him up and he seems to have given a lot to the community. Just know its very possible these days to be framed and set up.

Scripts cannot be "ripped". They are unlike textures, primitives and similar attributes whose properties need to be sent to the viewer in order to be rendered (seen).

I do work with a few people like Cryogenic Blitz"cryolife", Chalice"PSL",Skillz"gemni",Phox"onyx". That doesn't mean I am a bad person. I just work with top viewer creators.

I think I agree. I wish 3rd Party viewers had to go through some kind of check before they could go out. OnRez was a very good viewer and LL didn't seem to mind it.

Judging by the list of ripped brands, it looks as if the person behind the crime has been in SL for a few years. Some of the brands are only really known by oldbies.

Someone mentioned they could exploit an innocent person like this "If you had a full perm object". Well, the truth is, they can basically turn any object of yours full perm. So nothing is safe. Be careful who you accuse and ban these days.

There are more trusted viewers than Neillife to use for backing up content – Anyone using Neillife or Cryolife to backup anything should be aware of how many stores they will be autobanned from.

You might know him as MrPoenta from youtube. Frankly i dont think he is smart enough for anything besides posting videos on youtuybe, but on the other hand i dont think neil is better anywya, so they prolly using well known exploit for injecting shit on notecards…
So LordGregGreg, not only hes using Neillife, he is also using his private version which is pretty much undetectable Cryolife. You can see video from youtube of him using it…

be removed? It’s not helping anyone throwing more accusations around, especially as this is damaging relations with Linden Labs and a number of avatars that have been falsly accused of theft.
I completely sympathise with all creators who have had their work stolen, but making ungrounded allegations is just as harmful to individuals and SL in general. The repercussions of these allegations is causing a huge and detrimental knock on effect, which is helping no-one.
I kind of agree with a previous commenter about naming names so early in the game. People are innocent until proven guilty, but the rumor mill is never so just. Just by posting these names before verdicts have been reached can cause a lot of harm to their reputations and cause them a lot of grief. This is fine if they are guilty, but we can't know that so early in the game.
If not leaving the names off entirely, I think it would be important to include a very bold disclaimer about the degree to which the accused are being accused. Protecting innocent names is, IMO, just as important as protecting creator content.

Whatever happens, I feel that my name is soiled, tainted. I IMed the creator of Shiny Things and informed her that I had nothing to do with her stolen content, that I'm ashamed to be associated with this, and that I hope LL clears my name somehow. I just hope no one else gets wrongfully accused, because that alone is a sentence by itself. This may sound very cheesy, but I invested a lot on SL – time, money, emotion, and this situation is upsetting me very, very much.

I used to get sad and angry. Im emotionless now. Numb to it all. LL isnt on our side.
It is hurting real people who aren't rich from creating in SL who make as much as someone who sells homemade beaded necklaces at a local market stall.
The thieves are stealing from honest hardworking people, and they are the type of people who would also steal from market stalls in real life too.
Were all the objects in notecards? If so, this is probably a massive exploitation of the objects-in-notecards bug that there was a mandatory 1.23 upgrade to fix, the other week. No need for any third-party viewer to have been involved; even the normal Linden viewer could be easily modified to remove the client-side check that normally prevents the exploit. (Another example of why security has to be server-side wherever possible.)

I don't want anyone to be blamed for something they didn't do but this "oh he has _____ invested in SL so obviously he didn't do it" isn't a viable explanation for why he wouldn't do it. People pass free stuff around all the time and not all of them are your run of the mill scum bags.
When I was shown the exploit the Emerald viewer wasn't created yet it had nothing to do with a certain viewer because the prim box cheat worked on LLs regular viewer.

Point: The author did not say any of these people are thieves, she said they are SUSPECT. The term suspect alone suggests that further investigation is required.

It would be great – and RARE, I might add – if LL would help you keep your name clear. What if you owned a store? How much business would you lose in the wake between the accusation and the clearing of your name? How much business would you still lose after your name was cleared simply because your name was associated with content theft to begin with? Whatever the innocent people on this list face in the future because their names were named could have been prevented had the suspected not been revealed or had the author emphasized their assumed innocence.

What I stated about your anonymity is the truth, and nothing more. You are hiding your SL identity. Anonymity does serve to weaken some of your points. Previously, you asked specifically about how I might feel if I owned a store and was listed in this article as having my name associated with stolen content. I answered truthfully. You didn't get the answer you wanted – I get that. I can live with it, too.

I have received stolen content more times than I care to remember. Is it painful, in a small way, to delete all the beautiful hair and skin? Yes. Do I delete it faster that you can say ripped? Yes. Because the little bit of "aww, sucky" that gets caused by having to delete the great free goods is no match for the pain I feel for the designer who got their hard work and art stolen.

I still think it would be effective to have an official published list of names providing:
1. The accused.
2. The accuser
3. Status (processing, banned, cleared, etc)

3. The general population has facts instead of rumors.

Exactly, WTG. This is why the new "Content creation roadmap" is coming. Because LL would rather leave accounts open, free, and limitless, then to put some restrictions in place. With the new roadmap, LL hand selects an elitist group of people who they will protect under their wings, while leaving registration opened to ensure they continue to get those high player numbers while t hose not chosen get fucked by thievery. The high registration numbers LL boasts are really nothing more than thieves, bots, and people who tried the game once and hated it.
I've witnessed all kinds of griefing attacks where names were spoofed in the prims. It actually happened to the Love/Hate HQ a few months ago. The person who's names were on the prims had no clue what was going on, or why we were so angry with him. The next day there was the left overs of an attack on another sim that i saw, and the profile of the 'prim creator' liked playing SL with her sister and being a family

I have known Damen for over a year. I can gaurantee you that he would never do anything that has been suggested here. Infact he sufferes from theft of his creations. I have personally found his items stolen and being resold on many occasions.
He gives an enoumous amount of scripts and items away for free. I will be perfectly honest Im sure he could create anything in that box in a very short time from scratch.
He is one of the nicest and honest creators in SL.

Just found out that because the copied objects have full perms, the scripts inside them can also be accessed and therefore edited and copied too.
Can't offhand find the exact reference, but I'd thought Stroker said somewhere over in the SLUniverse thread that the items were full perms in inventory but reverted to their intended permissions when rezzed.
Do you say that some of the items have actually had their perms changed permanently?
As I understand it, this makes a very big difference in figuring out how the exploit was done, so it can be prevented in future.
Yes, he is right as long as the item is in inventory of an object when rezzed it remains full perms.
The two different exploits that were used to change the permissions of the objects in question have since been closed – one a couple of weeks ago, the other earlier in the year. LL knew of these exploits for quite some time before closing them. One of the exploits did not even require modifications to the client – you could do it through the menu of any viewer, including the official one. The functionality was built right in.
Are you refering to rezing 2 objects, one perm and one that you want to make it look like perm. Then go to tools->save to inventory. Someone told me about that one. Yeah LL knows of several bugs it looks like it. And they seem to look the other direction, if someone abuses it. The problem is that more griefers are being created because all it takes to create an LL account is pretty much nothing. Some sites do not even require you to put the right email.

I was told by a friend if LL didn't let people access asset ids none of this would happen. Like going llSetTexture("some key here",1); we can use other textures that we do not own on prims. I literally say no more asset ids in this game. Whose with me?
Here's the even more amazing thing to me. As a world-wide developer of heavy mission critical database systems, it seems to me that LL could have simply fixed the hole that allows this piracy in the first place.
Granted, sometimes it's a bit more complex if third party sus-systems are in play. But the amount of time these copy scripts have been around make me question LL's resolve.
Longer term, it makes me question SL's ability to weather future competition.

Its reasonable to assume that any of the "creators" of these prims or notecards have infact been "framed", by default any notecard sent to anyone is full perms, I have had my own used in notecard spam machines and found myself accused of being a spammer when I have no idea what the people are talking about, every time I have seen this exploit used on my items(many times now), the prims containing them have been any full perm prim these people can get hold of, one even used a prim with a Linden as creator, I think it would be wise to remove the "suspects" list you have on this site,

One of my real life acquaintances, doesn't have a creative bone in his body. He works for one of the big finance companies – make BIG MONEY doing very little. He has NEVER spent a PENNY in Second Life. Most of the stuff he wears is stolen, given to him by thieves and he passes it on.
Why is it always the creative ones suffer? SL WAS the perfect society for creative people to make a living. Instead there are those who want the creative ones to be flipping burgers.

I'm so sick about hearing about content creators and their wonderful works. I created content in SL. Big deal. You can go to any site on the web and rip off all the content, the site, and whatever else you desire if you are a thief. It's always been that way. Yet for some mysterious reason, the content generated in SL is supposed to be protected. And all the wonderful little minions need "Lindens" protection.
The whole setup makes me sick. And people and their "prize" builds and virtual possessions make me even sicker.
And something else, Linden has been cracked for a long time and they know it. I've personally found things in my inventory that someone has altered names, perms etc.. on. I've had people that put themselves on my friends list just to tell me they cracked an opensim server. I've seen clients with all the buttons greyed out and inoperable.
Just a few years ago Linden was cracked and credit cards needed changed. Nothing has changed here, people have access, and people are manipulating the item permissions throughout the SL database.
Why? Because they can.
Keep believing Linden is obligated to protect your wonderful virtual works. I personally believe that no hosting provider is responsible for protecting any of what you store on their servers. If you have something so wonderful, get a patent and a registered copyright.
Otherwise, it's just another prim item, another texture, that anyone can steal. Just as the web is and always was.

No, they played the game of Second Life. If they start a real company, host their own works, and someone steals that work, they have the right just as we all do to take legal action.
Saying that they are victimized needs further investigation. For example, whom hosts their product? Did they look around for a better host? Are they hosted on a shared resource where others have access to the servers? How many concurrent connections are allowed to this resource to which you state someone has been victimized? How many ports are open on their local machine?
Did they take the necessary precautions and get registered trade marks, copyrights, and in some cases patents on the intellectual property they claim is so valuable? If so, why do they not use the legal system and it's provisions to uphold such copyright information and intellectual property rights? If they choose to do so, have they sought out whom the thieves are? or did they just take their best pot shot at the hosting provider?
Have they removed all their works and found a better solution for themselves? The first concept of not allowing one to be victimized is to remove oneself from the issue. Have they sought to do so?
My recommendation is to find a better host, or better yet, host their own non-tangible virtual assets. Why wouldn't they if they have been victimized? It's the first step to not becoming or remaining the victim if that is the terms you wish to use.

Well, he/she just summed up why real life businesses should not use SL as a platform for, well, business as well as why people should not spend real money in SL.
But, it still doesn't justify content theft whether it's in Second Life or in Real Life. If a content creator in SL stole ideas/brand in RL then it is up to the RL creators to take action. The same goes in SL, if another resident stole creations of other residents (whether this creations are original or not) it is up to the creator in SL to take up action.

In this particular case, I think that the distribution was not done out of generosity, but rather out of spite or jealousy that these creators are doing so well, and the thieves being real life failures like to hurt these successful people, as they have nothing more constructive to do in their lives than to wreak revenge and havoc on others.

It has been demonstrated that anyone's full perm prim can be used to mask creator's names or can simply be used to hold items – like ANY gift box from ANY person or ANY designer, that allows you put content in it before you give it away. Also, Damen Hax and Zbornak Docherty both stated on different sites that they weren't even approached, questioned or even informed before being publicly calumnied. This sort of thing has happened before, with Hart Larsson and Mallory Cowen for example; I might be wrong but I believe Minnu Pallen was also cleared of her alleged licensing violation "scandal" – at least she's still working and creating beautiful skins; even Ding Fotherington was recently banned and attacked for false suspicions of copybotting. Good bloggers take their publishing responsibilities, rights, and obligations seriously. The written word is powerful and SL is not just a silly game with avatars. Real people are affected. One should always check the veracity of one's claims, certify the accuracy of one's sources and not be light-hearted when it comes to messing with people's integrity. The information they possess is not much stronger than mere hearsay. Yay to total bull poo! It disgusts me!
even if it there weren't any of the spoofing tools available in some of the 3rd party viewers, any full perm prim or box from anybody could be used to shove things in it

this post creates a very unfair bad word of mouth for the people mentioned, 2 of witch identify themselves and claim their innocent they're well known peopel in sl which leads me to think that's exactaly why their names were chosen
tell us content creators is it not stealing to use a copyrighted image from the web that you yourself didn't create or have paid money to have a license for and then take said image to create second life clothing, buildings, furniture, and other content you create. oh i think you all don't have a problem with this kind of stealing because it helps you make money, you only have problem with stealing that hurts you. well most of you do change at least 20% of the images you copy from web before using them in second life so you are then no longer in copyrights violation as all you have to do is change at least 20% of the original work for it to no longer be copyright infringement.
Good point, but the only problem with your argument is that many content creators don't use copyrighted material to make their stuff, and they still work copybotted. Just because a handful of content creators use copyrighted images, doesn't justify stealing from all the honest creators who create their work from scratch.
From your argument for stealing, I assume you are one of those thieves. Only a thief would lump all creators, good or bad, together, so that they can justify their reason for stealing and feel better for it. Awww poor you.
Lets get this over and done with, okay? … Thieves don't need an excuse, its natural that thieves create a reason in their head to make themselves feel better about stealing (in that way, they are creative I suppose) A thief is a thief – even if you steal from another thief, that still makes you a thief too. Two wrongs do not make a right.
Why is there an assumption that everyone copying inventory is a thief?
I have more than one avatar and I want to transfer all of my inventory from one to the other. I can’t, because of the way permissioning works. I’m actively considering finding a copybot program to do it, because I can’t afford to spend thousands of L$ re-buying inventory that I already supposedly own.
Also, why is there not the basic right to be able to re-sell anything I own (at a lower price than the purchase price) like I can in rl?
Why is No-Copy implemented as one copy within an entire inventory rather than one copy per avatar? (No, they’re not the same thing – “One Copy per Avatar implies the ability to make multiple copies throughout an avatars inventory, all of which are lost if one of those copies is transferred)
So often, content creators see things only from their own perspective, rather than asking what it is about the system is that is so broken and how can it be fixed. And why isn’t it being fixed.
Linden Labs will not fix the problem until they lose enough business to make it worth taking away 3rd party viewers. As long as they have stable income they see no need to change any part of the platform. I’ve been in SL for over a year and not much has changed. And I HIGHLY doubt it will any time soon seeing as how Linden Labs is looking to sell SL. At this point their only concern is cleaning up its image so that it is more presentable in a family environment so that it will have market appeal to family-oriented investors.
