What a crock of shit! They’re cheating the designers out of publicity, and limiting bloggers too?
As an individual blogger, I couldn’t have given both International Fashion Week and The Summer of Love Fair the attention each deserved (by virtue of being a big event in SL). After reading this notice, I’m even more glad that I chose to focus on The Summer of Love Fair.
Just adding one thing. I just did a quick glance around the well-known blogs that I’ve got feeding into an iGoogle page, and then the feed/syndication sites, followed by a search on Google blogs. I found about 6 blogs (other than Glance’s blog) that are actively blogging IFW (more than one post, with pictures of clothing available at the event). Of the 6, about half were well known to me, and half were ones I’d never heard of. I found 2 or 3 other blogs that have just posted basic event notices, the type of information that Glance would release in pr notices. That’s 8 or 9 blogs, not 25. I’m assuming that I’ve missed a few in my search and working through the feeds…and that maybe some people just haven’t made posts yet.
I don’t get the point of this post…or the drama you are desperately trying to create.
I made the event list, not the 25 selected and you don’t see me bitching about it! I went, had a blast checking it out and picked up fabulous freebies, looked around and saw many things displayed that I already owned and could incorporate into my blog posts.
But then again, I don’t think I am “entitled” to get things just cos I’m a blogger.
I think event organizers struggle with two conflicting goals – maximizing publicity while at the same time minimizing the aggravation and stress on designers who are asked to participate. While the event and the designers benefit from the exposure on the blogs and the feeds, they are often consumed with preparing for fashion shows, setting up the sim, the stores, the vendors and get frustrated with the flood of review requests from bloggers all eager to participate and highlight as much of the event as they can.
I don’t know the solution. This seems to be an attempt to manage the flow of requests, though since it results in fewer bloggers posting about the event because of blogging budgets and dented egos, it’s not the right solution, yet.
I sometimes think that someone (not me) should create a bonded agency for CSR and event management – one that protects designers from theft of their property through commercial insurance so designers can feel secure in leaving these requests and other customer service issues in the hands of someone else without fear of theft.
Another solution that occurs to me is for events to have someone who is sort of a blog wrangler – and asking designers to provide NO COPY/Transfer items to the wrangler to give out to bloggers. They could ask designers to give 3 or so copies of each outfit to pass to bloggers, ensuring that one dress is not blogged 10 times while another is ignored. Bloggers could be limited to requesting no more than 2 times the number of days in the event outfits – since few blog more than twice a day, keeping the distribution fair and realistic.
I am sure there is some way that both the goals of maximizing publicity and of managing demands on designers can be achieved if we approach it with a cooperative spirit instead of simply picking up our toys and going home.
