SO♥LD: Photoshop Newb

There is always a debate on whether fashion bloggers should Photoshop their images.  I think it depends on the individual and what you are blogging.  A little work in Photoshop can make your pictures look good and not cross the line into miss representing the product you are wearing.

I am no expert, I still put myself in the newb category when it comes to PS.  The biggest hurdle in PS is taking the time to sit down and learn the basics. There are tons of video tutorials out there from some really talented people in the SL community that show advanced techniques. But what good is that to you if you have no idea what they are talking about. What is a brush, a mask, an adjustment layer.  The place I went to learn the basics and more is Photoshop Essentials. I started with the PS Basics tab and started on the last page with the very first tutorial, and I’m still working forward.

Sometimes you see people add a nice aged photo look or add a frame. You can do that in the Picnik tool available in flickr under the action menu or with plugins for PS. Casja shared the link to a nice plugin tool called Filter Forge it has a some pretty cool effects you can add to photos.

So basically with a little knowledge I went from a photo that looked like this:

Photoshop Newb - Before

To an image that looks like this.

Photoshop Newb - After

I think, I’d probably turn down the saturation a bit. But overall the picture looks a bit better and the items I’m wearing pretty much look as they would in SL, except for the skin. But everyone demos skins before they buy them right?

I’ll have another blog post on what I’m wearing and the awesome pose prop from Adorkable, that I’m using for this pic. Also this cute pen necklace from MIAO, Kess has it in her main store and its still at the discounted stumblebum price, for now.

  1. I know how to do some things in PS Elements really well, but then people mention masking layers and other terms that go straight over my head so there is much more to learn. In SL, I’ve found the liquify tool and levels most valuable for taming pointy limbs and the flatness of images.

I never edit clothing, hair or skins in case someone is looking to buy an item and is potentially misled. Otherwise, I’ll use any menu function that looks interesting :-) .
