Remember how we said we were gone for the holidays… but we’d come back if something groundbreaking happened?

Well, the Another Shop creator Eloh Eliot released new skins – that INCLUDE the source files, full perm.
What does this mean for the skinners of SL? I believe it means that many of them just lost some business. One friend remarked to me, “I won’t have to buy any skins now!” … she can make her own! Given that she’s a fiend for Tete-a-Pied, chances of her going back there when she needs another skin are now more slim than they were before. She can take the Another Shop files and create anything to fit her very makeup needs… and with four different shades of skin! This doesn’t mean that Another Shop will now fail… actually, it means Eloh Eliot will succeed more. Plus, she always has the chance to create a new line of skins, not open source, and sell them again. When I visited last night, Another Shop was lagtastic with all the avatars scrambling to get copies of the files. I even downloaded them for one girl and emailed them to her, because she’s currently down and out without SL but has photoshop – so she can play with the files to her heart’s content.
So what do the other skin creators think of this? Feel free to leave your thoughts below.
And what does this mean for our “skin hijackers”, who often take skin files and resell them for ungodly amounts of money?
Or what happens if someone creates a new makeup and decides to sell the “makeup”? Is that the same as reselling the skin?
No one in the community has done this before to my knowledge. This is rather… incredible and fantastic. Maybe not so much for those that create and sell skins.

(Upon visiting Another shop)
Robin Sojourner: I was just curious. A friend told me about this, and I thought I’d come here and see. Always interesting to see what other people are doing.
Tenshi Vielle: But anywho, I know you’ve helped MANY of us along the way to content creation… Yes! Many of us are wondering if this will affect the SL fashion world in any aspect.
Robin Sojourner: I don’t know. That’s another reason I’m here. Generally, I suggest that people never sell or give away anything with full permissions, which these are. (I wanted to check, and make sure they still were.)
Tenshi Vielle: Yeah, I doubt they’ll change – it appears to be the creator’s full intention
Robin Sojourner: There are a number of reasons for this. For prims, it’s vitally important that you never allow them out with full perms, because a griefer can take them, make them into whatever he wants, and they’ll all have your name on them as the Creator.
Tenshi Vielle: She’s been steadily lowering the price of her skins since she appeared around Thanksgiving.
Robin Sojourner: These skins will always have the Creator’s name, too. No matter what kind of thing people decide to put in the Texture slots. Personally, I think that’s a really bad idea.
Tenshi Vielle: *nods*
Tenshi Vielle: I suppose we’ll have to wait and see how it pans out.
Robin Sojourner: I have no idea why she’s doing this. But I doubt that it will affect other creators much, for the same reason that people buy from multiple creators now.
Robin Sojourner: Her skins will always look like hers. In a couple of months, anyone walking around in one of these will be instantly recognizable as someone wearing a freebie skin, I think. Even if they really purchased it from a “business in a box”
Robin Sojourner: I doubt that most people will want to be seen like that, no matter who good the skin is. But you know more about fashion than I do. ![]()
Tenshi Vielle:
Only the social aspects, and I still fumble at that!! heh
Robin Sojourner: And I’ve noticed that people here like to change their “look”.
Robin Sojourner: When you consider that even a really expensive skin is, in reality, about the same price as going to a movie, I’d be surprised if this has much of an impact for anyone except new residents.
Tenshi Vielle: (New Residents = big impact, thanks to open registration)
Robin Sojourner: Since I’ve read that there are already people who have collected all of these to hand to new residents, it probably will, there.
Robin Sojourner: Yeah, but new residents don’t normally buy expensive skins their first day or two, unless they are alts. ![]()
Tenshi Vielle: Right ![]()
Tenshi Vielle: many of them try to though.
Tenshi Vielle: especially if they have previous experience in online gaming or just gaming in general
Robin Sojourner: They’re going to look like newbies, when they wear these, I’m thinking.
Tenshi Vielle: some of them immediately try to move on to customizing their avatar
Robin Sojourner: and most of them really don’t want that.
Robin Sojourner: Exactly.
Tenshi Vielle: That would suck, to be frank – these skins are GOOD.
Robin Sojourner: yeah, the faces are. I haven’t seen the rest.
Robin Sojourner: But ..
Robin Sojourner: Has anyone asked the creator why she’s doing this?
Tenshi Vielle: No – the creator is offline, in the midst of a move.
Tenshi Vielle: There’s a notecard in the box though…
Robin Sojourner nods
Robin Sojourner: I haven’t had a chance to read it.
Tenshi Vielle: It doesn’t say much
Robin Sojourner: no reasons.
Tenshi Vielle: Just “Hey, I put makeupless textures in here for you too!”
Tenshi Vielle: Right. No reasons.
Robin Sojourner: I would be really interested in her reasoning.
To Download the Files from SL:
Open the texture in the Second Life Viewer. (OnRez lacks content creation capabilities necessary to download textures.)
Click File > Save Texture As
Congrats! You now own the files!
I was playing with these earlier and discovered that adding makeup to them is easiest when you create a new layer on top in Photoshop, set the layer to “Multiply”, and work from there.

what kind of file does it download?
I think this is a fantastic idea. Why she did this, though, I have NO idea. Besides, it’s a well known fact that these skins are FREE. If anyone finds them for sale, they’ll just scoff and turn away. (if anyone’s dumb enough to resell them in the first place.)
I don’t think skin buisnesses will lose much out of this, to be honest. People will eventually get tired of the way Another Shop’s skins look on them, and find a new look. And if skin creators bust out new skin after skin, I don’t think it’ll be a problem.
I plan on making makeups for my Another Shop skins, yes. But that won’t stop me from buying the next great skin.
The files download in .tga.
I’m working on my Another Skin makeup right now.
I’m curious what kind of license there is on this, or if that was even considered. There are versions of the creative commons” license that say “you can have this, change it, use it any way you want but you can’t sell it” and there is the version that says “Do anything you want with it including sell it!” There is also (i think) a version that says “If you wanna change it around and sell it, go ahead, but please don’t just sell it as is.”
Eloh Eliot is giving these away with full perms (remember “full perms” only applies to the rights in game not to any legal status) but doesn’t clarify the RL legal status. Is this a free-for all? Or a gift for us to use responsibly? If Eloh really is giving the go ahead with NO limits at all….well….unfortunately people WILL have the legal right to resell these for profit, ethical or not.
Eloh, if you are out there…maybe you can clarify your intentions?
I seriously doubt this will put much of a dent in other skin designers’ businesses.
For one thing, most seasoned residents already have their personal favorite skin brand and see other brands not as a replacement, but rather an enhancement to their collection. There are lots of skins that I like, and I’ve spent a LOT of money on other skin brands that now hold a place in my inventory, but this doesn’t mean I will ever abandon my favorite (which is RaC). If anything, I think the sector of skin business that *might* feel this the most are the shops selling hand-drawn skins.
I do think it’s likely that these skins will eventually achieve the same kind of ubiquity that a skin like the CS Malibu has, and that alone will make people want to own different brands besides Another. I’ve already given the skins to several SL Mentors and I know a friend of mine has distributed them to even more, in the hopes that they will share these with the newer players.
If these skins do attain the same sort of universal (metaversal?) status that other current freebies occupy, then I sincerely doubt “skin hijackers” would stand to make much money.
What would be really cool to see is a sort of modding community emerge out of this, where different individuals show off/share the tweaks they’ve made.
Well, here’s the thing. With the TGA’s, within a week we could see a new designer blossom that’s working from the Another Shop skins – because the ability to warp these into something unrecognizable is extremely possible.
I’m hoping these skins don’t gather the “ugh, freebie!” stigma that many skins have now received.
I think the skins are a great idea for people wanting to learn how to make their own skins, but I don’t think it will drastically effect the sales of other skin makers. It’s kind of the same as someone offering web site design. Sure, any Joe on the street can make their own website, so why hire someone to do it? Well, there are plenty of people out there that don’t want to bother creating something on their own or simply don’t have the skills or resources to do so. Drawing makeup on a skin isn’t as easy some people might think and many people will not be able to get the results they want on their own.
but I am looking forward to what you create with it, Tenshi
I don’t think this will ruin any skin designers for the simple fact that the majority of shoppers in SL aren’t artistic. I’m not insulting people, but it’s not like everyone in second life knows how to use photoshop.
I love Eloh’s skins. I loved them before this and I love them even more now that I get to doodle on them.
Eloh seems to be one of these intriguing people who surprises you more and more. I love how she has pushed the boundaries here and made us all think and gossip. Maybe she has done this for a reason, or possibly, she just thought “f**k it, I’m bored with these skins, you lot can have them” and left us all a lovely pressie.
I think a handful of idiots will try to resell these skins, but I doubt they will have much luck. The news that they are free has spread like wildfire so no-one in their right mind would buy them. It’s quite similar to Arcadia’s Asylums’ creations, everyone knows these were free/full perms to start with and I have never seen any of Arcadia’s goods up for resell (correct me if I’m wrong there).
I hope to play with my own makeup on Eloh’s skins, I don’t have the skills yet to make a full skin from scratch so it will be great fun to experiment with these.
Personally I will not stop buying from other skin designers. If I find a skin which hits me right between the eyes and suits my shape perfectly, I will have to buy it.
Thank you Eloh, you are a legend! I really hope this means you are moving on to something new and you are going to surprise us again. You are a very talented artist.
the boobs on these skins are the best i have seen in SL,no blurry nipples.
i do hope that some skin creators will think a little when they sell ther skins.. i won’t pay full price for a skin i already have just to get a new eye makeup, it is inzane.
I think the variety of the skins will keep them from getting old. You have the 4 skins tones, 7 makeups each, freckled for each and 2 different brow options and that is just for those who do not want to try their hand at making their own makeups.
I bought all the skins when they were 100L a piece because I loved her former skins and bought all of them too.
But yeah, I think it’s nice of Eloh to do this. But I’m worried that these will be resold, even more so when two people were actually talking about how to claim these skins as their own.
These skins didn’t keep me from buying other designers skins when I bought them, hence I don’t think that it will affect the skinmakers businesses.
“why?” i asked her, she said, “because”, she told me she wanted to help people who wanted to make their own unique skin.
it seemed from my brief talk with her… she just made em and thought people might wanna mod theirs to make it their own.
she even said, sell them, give them, do whatever you want….
i WON’T be selling them… and i’d be lying if i said i didn’t learn a few things from seeing the textures…
i’ve been working on my “fLawLess” skins for oh…. a very very long time… (over a year?) not may people offer any suggestions or help with skins for that matter… it’s a LOT of trial and in my case ERROR (just like clothing) so to see her texture, along with a few others i found, was helpful for me. everyone sorta does things really different, and it’s nice to have reference materials. like elikapeka’s hair making tutorials… from textures to everything…
it could hurt the market, just like the tons of freebies can, but in the end, it will all balance out i think… business changes all the time, in RL and SL… and business owners must always think, shift, and do new things to attract customers.
skins used to be 5 & 6k… (why i never bought one) and free clothes were NOT really something one would want to wear.
now a newbie or any player could really never buy anything again with all the freebies on the grid… and look pretty dang good too!
thank goooodness for all you lil shopoholics who have to change your clothes a few times a day and your look, hehe.!!!!
anyway, my 2 cents!
I know this is a dumb question but… how do you export the Eloh Eliot tga file from SL into photoshop? I think that this is a great idea, now I can experiment making skins since I am a novice:)
And to clarify, I will use these files as a guide… not to just add a little something on top and try to sell them as my own.
i kinda think this person has really low self confidence, look at the store name “another shop” and the skins “another skin”, does she not have self worth for her work?
Reasoning?
Dunno. Maybe she heard/read about the Long Tail, or Cluetrain, or Seth Godin. Free stuff -> gets you name, more traffic and such. And even more sells.
She is smart, using one of the best marketing/PR strategies there is in my opinion. Kudos.
Generating Buzz.
Okeys.
So how this download texture to the pc work? Sowy if this sounds stupid to ask, but I never got a texture from sl to my pc to work on PS.
Could someone explain me in details how do I do that? or gimme an online tutorial? I have NO intentions to sell the modified skins, I juz want to try to make diferent make-ups and such.
I’d appreciate a help.
Thx ^_^
I picked them up. I have no intention whatsoever of altering them and selling them, but I will learn from them. How I wish there had been someone like Eloh around when I was doing the hard time learning how to paint my skins from scratch! Such wonderful clevage!
Also, it should be mentioned that although this has spread like wildfire among a particular group of avatars, there are thousands of people out there still wearing that freebie skin, you know the one with the little teardrop, and it’s likenesses? I don’t even know who made the original of that one. Anyway I digress. I hope these skins DO make it into the freebie boxes. It will make people who wear freebie skins a little easier on the eye, and it will be great for Eloh’s business, if/when she releases a new line of skins
To answer my own question (for others now); To upload the texture from SL you hit ‘file’, then ‘save texture as’, then define your destination. Simple as pie. Der. I disagree with ‘maybe’ that Eloh has no self confidence. This action says to me that she has self esteem AND selflessness. It’s an altruistic action on her part to do this. I am hoping however that more selfish people will not just duplicate and sell, but knowing how people are (SL and everywhere) this will happen. I am personally going to thank Eloh Eliot and make a donation.
“What would be really cool to see is a sort of modding community emerge out of this, where different individuals show off/share the tweaks they’ve made.”
I’d like to see this happen too, where the mods end up being showcased as a project and are put up for people to enjoy without charging or for a minimal fee (like… L$10? Upload fee only?)
Ok, I guess I owe y’alls an explanation (zomg wall o’ text coming up)… I had been sorta planning to release some full-permission stuffs for a while, but I was a little concerned I might kinda rustle a few feathers, or that maybe scam-artists might sell my free/full-perm stuff to newbies. However, I also thought it’d be moar awesome just to see how other people could use full-permission stuffs to learn from and make something else–after all, SL has a lot of really talented and motivated people–especially when it comes to d.i.y.-type things.
So… last week, I just kinda decided to just go ahead and make my current line of skins full-permissions and see what’d happen (seemed like a good idea after a holiday party & a few drinks >._<).
Thanks Eloh!!
I guess it’s an experiment for everyone!
I didn’t read all the comments so forgive me if this has already been addressed… Is there going to be a place where everyone can put up photos of their modded skins? I’d love to see what every one has done
How about a Charity Fundraiser ??
Imagine if well loved designers took the skins and added their own flair to each of them , packaged them up and possibly put them on OnRez into a category , they could all go in the same cat. same tags etc and then everyone could buy from their fav designers as well as discover some incredible talent, as OnRez has the split commision thing they could just do a full 100% split to a decided upon charity for say 50L each ??
then not only does everyone have one place to get their hands on some truly incredible skin revamps but what Eloh has done gets payed forward (yes Im a mushbag I cried and cried watching that movie lol )
Just a thought anyway there could be some great work done and it doesnt only have to be makeup but body art etc ..
xoxox Sasy xoxo
hey, i love the idea of a charity fundraiser! i’d totally be part of that
and alyssum, we could create a flickr gallery for that.
If anyone wants to help out or has more ideas ?? Contact me with a Notecard in world ..Im all excited now , so much for sleeping
) I do so love a project lol
xoxox Sasy xoxo
Yay Eloh
So does this mean you are planning a new line of skins (or something else)?
Sasy – a charity fundraiser is a brilliant idea. It would be really interesting to see what SL designers could do to these skins, particularly those who don’t make skins usually
nice skins, I will sure buy your new line of skins when you release them
Alyssum: What a great idea. Let me know if you guys get the Flickr stream up and running.
Sasy: I think that’s a wonderful idea. Count me in!
sasssafrasssssssssssssssssss you so rock and remind me all the time why i love you so much!!!
great idea!!! i’d LOVE to do that!
count me in too!
xoxoxoxoxox,
caLLie
I’m a pay it forward’er too! I would *love* to do this!
I did a little googling and here are a few charities ideas I came up with.
http://www.facingtheworld.net/
http://www.smiletrain.org/
http://www.kidsfoundation.org.au/
http://www.care.org/
Maybe one of the many burn foundations who help people get reconstructive surgery?
Count me in, too!
These are pretty damned good work, so i sent a group notice out to the hobo group which is 800+ strong…
I love the idea of the fundraiser AND I love that the comments on this post seem to be ending on a positive note. I want to put my two cents in here as a freebie blogger. One of the reasons I started this blog was for all the people I talked to who spent a whole bunch of time trying to figure out SL and then gave up because they couldn’t figure out where to go or how to change clothes when they got there, etc. etc. I tried to simplify with SLurls etc. I remember buying a shape for a whole lotta lindens when I got here and not being able to figure out why I didn’t look like the picture. I had no idea that shapes and skins were different. Anyhow, long story short I don’t think that this will cut in to purchase of skins from Newbies because they won’t have a clue (nor will they want to at first) how to tweak their own skins. They could possibly get duped into buying skins that other people are selling nefariously as their own, but they probably won’t even ever realise it happened, because, as stated earlier, you always want to move on to something better once you’ve been here awhile. You also start to figure out your own style. Although, I do keep going back to the TaP newbie skins because they are just beautiful free or not. In short, I feel like these free files will be more fun for people who already have experience to play with and would just be one more complicated thing that newbies wouldn’t want to try to figure out.
Anyone looking to be involved with the fund raiser, please contact Sasy Scarborough. It doesn’t appear that she is looking for sponsorships or anything of the sort, but I’m sure that anyone who wants to participate is welcome to IM her.
I don’t think this is going to put a dent into anyones business unless they release skins crappier than this one.
I think this is great especially for people who want to learn how to make skins.
But unless this skin pwnd all other skins out there, there is absolutely NO WAY anyone is going out of business. Not to mention the fact everyone likes different skins for different reasons, just because this is free doesnt mean everyone is going to wear it religiously.
Iv been working on makeups for a while not on a skin line i tryed (anf failed spectacly) to make.
With the release of these skin roslin from TAP can sleep becuase ill stop IMing her with sujjestions
(sprry ros love ya rele!)
Im fond of odder makeups and my extreme looks which alot of designer steer away from becuase there not commecaily vable becuase of another shop i think we can start to play with the artistic side in SL with the removal of the money aspect.
Iv already made about 5 diffrent looks and iv got umpteen ideas still to i cant wait to actuly get back into sl (DAM COMPUETER) and try the one my avi.
If theres any fundrasier im surly in for that!
P.S LOVELY if you the same person that owns loveys MAKE NEW SKINS PLEASE WE LOVE YOU FOR THEM!
ta ta
marni
Nope, not me =)
she actually included a link to the online psd files :S
Honestly, the only person who is going to go out of business for this is her. In a few months these will be in every freebie store and BIAB you can find.
Happy new years err’body.
Fantastic idea. This kind of action represents the best of SL, people community minded sharing their skill and inspiring others to learn and experiment. It’s motivating people to reach into their creativity, and showing new people the kind of skill you can achieve and that is possible.
Some people are still going to try and rip newbies off no matter what, but since Eloh has released her wonderful skins from her own generosity, that will motivate the community to be more protective and vigilant with dodgy resellers.
Certainly was unexpected, but a lovely gesture I think
I think it is really generouse and the more attention we give that these skins are for artistic purposes them more poeple will not re sell them
Marni that isnt true. Thieves are abundant and dont care about rules or anyone but themselves. They will take these skins and the innocent will get them and begin redistributing them out of ignorance.
But putting that aside I agree with eyvamatova. This is a really nice gesture and im sure it will spark a new route in the lives of designers or “wannabe-designers” who just couldnt , for the life of them, take up skin making. These files are going to be a nice aid for them. But it doesnt change the fact theyre going to be destributed around the grid freely. So I still stand with my first reaction which was that no one is going to go out of business.
This is an interesting topic but not as big of a deal as the article tried to make it.
I found it Resaler…
