What I Like #12

It’s a joy to prepare these columns for you. Looking for excellence and beauty is a pleasure and being able to talk about it and share what I like with so many folks is an absolute gift. I am grateful to the many Second Life® artists who do the work that I highlight. Without them, there would be no column. However, I am going to make a familiar plea and ask readers to suggest people whose work they think has been overlooked or perhaps never discovered. By the way, there’s nothing wrong with suggesting yourself. False modesty is self-sabotage. You can make your suggestions in comments or, if you’re shy, by email to my first.lastname@gmail.com. I would spell it out but then I would get eleventy million offers for penile enhancement.

In Case of Emergency

I love the work of Alles Klaar. It’s very much like her – witty and clever and fun. This picture is called In Case of Emergency, which obliquely references the broken glass flying in front of her. I love so much about this picture from the incongruity of the boxing gloves and helmet with the feather dress to the limited color palette in the background and dress that makes the red of the boxing gloves, flowers and helmet really pop. The geometry is amazing as well, the red forming a triangle that is echoed by the lines of the power lines in the background. But I don’t want to focus on just this one and I encourage you to take a dive into her photostream where there were many others I considered highlighting including several boxing pictures.

I like this diptych from Angel Cleghorn for Angel Cleghorn Second Life. I love the old Polaroid® colors that have faded over the decades since the picture was snapped that suit so well the camera from Artilleri she’s holding. I thought her use of bokeh color highlights was a fun, untraditional choice. It’s not realistic, but after all, it’s Second Life.

Silence

I love black and white photos and they always catch my eye. This one from Moniq Salamander for her blog Through Salamander’s Eyes is not quite a black and white photo. There are tiny flashes of color including the intense colors in the necklace. Going for a desaturated monotone is a excellent choice to portray the idea of Silence. The pose adds a dynamic feeling as does her gaze into the photo.

LookBook 17-8-2011

Here’s another eye-catching black and white. This one is all black and white this time. It’s by Leah McCullough for her self-named blog. I have featured her before, though her last appearance was with a rich, color-saturated shot. This photo is beautifully framed by the bricks on the ground, the lamppost and the buildings. The way the road blurs while still retaining the curving lines that curve up and away really give dimension to the picture. I like her pose, it makes me think someone has just called her name and she’s paused to glance over her shoulder to see who it is.

LeFay Nails

I went back and forth trying to decide which picture from Serene Fairey’s SL Transfusion post, but finally had to select this one for its strength. This is how you shoot a picture dead center – when that adds to the sense of focus and power. She looks like she’s calling forth the elements.

Gabrielle - Grape

I love this shot from Jenica Lander for Hey Girlfriend. This is such a natural looking snap, catching someone moving away from the camera. The out of focus grass in front adds to its verisimilitude while also giving it depth.

I love the moody atmosphere in this picture by Bellatrix Mai of Fashion Fiends. The little flashes of sunshine through the trees add to the natural look of the picture as does the grass in the forefront. She off-center and looking into the picture and framed by the trees in the background and the grass in front. It’s a lovely, slightly spooky photo that works on all levels.

And now for something completely different, as bright as the former was dark. My browsing came to a dead stop when I saw this picture from Thalia Heckroth for her blog. You can feel the burning heat of the sun in this picture. It’s glare blurs and obscures just as it does in real life. It’s a powerful picture and stunning in that so many of us who shoot in Second Life® don’t dare be so bold with the sunlight.

fall's just around the corner

I like this duo from Destiny Philbin for My Daily Style. She has both pictures look toward each other which always makes them hold together better. I love the styling in this picture and the way she took advantage of that big pouf of hair on her head to do that stretching pose that usually sinks your arm into a mess of hair. There’s no bells and whistles, but if the photo is composed beautifully, you don’t need bells and whistles.

I bookmarked 3 posts from Sixtine Edenflower from Just Fashion this last week. I selected this one for the defiant look on her face and the dynamic sense of movement in the picture. I love the lighting and how it almost puts a caret or parenthesis around her body. It’s a fun and lively photo that makes me smile.

Sanity

The Wow! Factor in this picture from Mavi Beck for Modavia Fashion Marketing blog is mind-boggling. She uses the padding in the cell to create perspective in its most classical form. She repeats and emphasizes those lines with shadows. Her pose is so natural and her face and eyes are so alert that you can practically hear her thinking. It just blew me away on every level.

Suri & Lila 2

I like this picture from Lila Quander of Demented Divas. She is a genius at accessorizing and styling and I love to see what she comes up with. I like this picture for its immediacy, the way she zooms right in on the pair of them. Doing so makes their bodies’ geometry more prominent. I like the use of Depth of Field to give it dimension.

control_005

This picture from Sileny Noel for Free*Style is a bit of genius. I mean, who would think when shooting a dress with a bunch of belts to dress the set with an electric chair? Yet, it works so perfectly. I love that kind of quirky inspiration that illuminates the individualism of the photographers.

Lastly, I love this photo from Sylivia Olivier of coffeesmoke. It’s a powerful photo enhanced by the strong pose that entwines the avatars and highlights the start contrast between the skins. The idea of yin and yang is enhanced by the painted circle on her thigh. It’s a thoughtful and fascinating picture.
