Sooooo…. baaad designers that shall no be named don’t do enough diversity skins, and should be punished, right?
As if designers were here to promote diversity. Designers run businesses, they follow what people want. The could put ten times more “diversity skins” in their vendors, if people didn’t want them, they wouden’t sell them more. That’s a basic rule of marketing: you can’t sell people stuff they don’t desire or need.
So the residents should be more diverse… and buy more diversity skins. There are a lot of very (very very!!!) nice black skins on the market, for example, some cool asian ones as well. Do I see a lot of them worn in world? Answer is NO. Most black or asian people IRL I know in sl wear white skins in sl. Designers’ fault? I don’t think so.
Talking about diversity, it’s so PC to talk only about skin color.
Do you see a lot of avatars that aren’t skinny and look older than 25? Do you think SL is open to other nationalities and languages than USA and English? seeing how most American people don’t bother to not use slang all the time, and laugh at/discriminate foreign language speakers (jajajaja! remember?), I doubt it. Isn’t there a constant bashing on furries, child or even small avatars? (playing a child doesn’t mean you’re a pedophile, mind you. Are you so obsessed with sex to see it everywhere?)

There are plenty of skinners that offer diversity in their products, you just need to look around more. The problem is that you depend on the feed to tell you what to buy.
many sellers don’t get as much press as they deserve (and sometimes don’t even want) don’t have a blog or know somebody who knows somebody in the blogging world…

I am not sure where some people get their freebies, but some of us do offer an item as a freebie and it is of good quality. Please don’t generalize. I am also a proud participant of the Peace on Earth Hunt, and I believe my items are nice. But no one can be everything to all people.
re diversity skins ive never really had a problem findking good black skins my favs are gala p, soul skins. minnu, and M&R cupcakes & Redgrave are ones i wear but chai just did some new ones which look good not tried but there are tons out there.

#2. You boycott stores if the models are all white, are you being unreasonable? No, you are being racist. IRL I am olive skinned thanks to my Egyptian father. There are no “hello Arabs can shop here too—here is an Arab woman to model our shit!” stores. I am waiting for this to happen—–not. No shapes with Arab noses thanks to Linden Labs…but made my own shape anyway. I don’t shop because I like the models or the blogger “stylist wannabes”. I wear tan CHAI or Soul, and demo any skin that has red lips. *shrugs*
#4. I can’t rag on furries anymore like I used to when I was a noob. I have met some furries that are actually cool humans, who are hot IRL, and never met one who chats like Snarf. Who I don’t like are the underage childish teenybopper furries, who shouldn’t be on the main grid.

Ben , I don’t think it matters what you are in rl and what skin you wear in sl. I know lot’s of people who wear the opposite of what they are in rl. Although most of the asian/blacks I know here do try to to represent themselves that way in sl.
You may be right designers probably go after what people prefer to buy, but how do they know unless they have tried making it. I have seen some skin designers who has never even put forth the effort. Consumers also buy from brands in which they see themselves represented. I can count on one hand how many black people I have seen in abercrombie and fitch. Walk into Casa del Shai, that is an example of a designer embracing the sl culture . Diversity doesn’t just boil down to skin’s only.
*Oh and “jajajaja” annoys the hell out of me too, deal with it. So does bling and ebonics and the list goes on and on.
#4: I’ve seen a surprising amount of people whose hair and jewerly and facelights have about 5 times the prim count than the average stock fur avatar. If you break it down, there’s surprisingly few prims to an average fur avatar.

2. I noticed this while shopping the other day. A skin shop that didn’t sell any skin darker than a light tan with some versions not having tan at all. I wouldn’t blame you for not shopping there I wouldn’t either. It took me a month to find a good darker skinned skin after the one I had before was bought by so many avatars that I’d be in a club and 5 other avi’s would look just like me. To those saying there are plenty of skin creators doing diverse skins maybe that’s a sign? I don’t just shop from the feeds and I don’t think there is enough variety of really good skins in darker tones.
I’ll stick to my rule that people should be able to do what they want with their business but I’ll continue to avoid their stores and shop at skin shops that want my business. I thank the creators who do create them.
As far as the models I don’t really pay attention to that.

@Good Grief!! I assure you, many people including me know many many skins that are not caucasian, and they’re not hidden in some basements of unknown skinners. I know traditional Japanese clothing stores, as well as Chinese ones, Polynesian ones, and many other I don’t even know where they are from. Shai offers some stuff from her own culture indeed.
You say people often look the opposite of what they are in rl, that’s probably true. What do you think they need to find in shops to feel “represented”? the rl them, the sl them? it becomes complicated a bit don’t you think? Are we gonna ask for elven models at Armidi? Faeries at The Block? Guys modeling Simone’s gowns?
Sl is made by its residents, they say. Let the residents bring the diversity, and don’t just wait for those who build the world and offer its content to do the whole work! Everything you need to express diversity is here! just use it!
@ Talon: I agree 200% !!! Many prim hair have more prims than two or three furry avatars. Not mentioning flexi skirts and accessories parts (uber laggy stuff), tiny stellar systems as face lights (mostly useless since windlight, but come on, faith is everything!) and you will see common “fashionistas” flirting with an avatar rendering cost around 4000.

I think a lot of it is up to your shape. If you buy an “asian” skin you are not suddenly going to appear asian.
I am kind of in awe people are saying they will not shop at a store that does not offer any other skin tone but white.
I wasn’t even going to comment, but yes I think #2 you are being very unreasonable. Also, have you ever thought to message the shop owner and perhaps suggest some of this so called “diversity” you are looking for?
There is diversity in SL. Do not expect to get it from ONE, or a small handful, of shops. Get out of your uncomfortable comfort zone and explore. Its out there.
Bravo to everyone who chooses to be represented by a non-human avatar. You make SL exactly what it is mean’t to be in my opinion. A place where reality is what you make it. I do love furries and tinies in SL. In fact when I’m bored with this modeling gig, I may become somthing else.
Tolerance and respecting diversity is what we need more of in this game. There is no social strata here…I know ppl like to think there is when they are are CEO’s and all the rest of the titles you emblazoned on tags, but that’s make believe. I was actually privy to a conversation where someone said they felt like fainting when some well known walked into the room. I mean really…are they serious? No-one here is any more entitled or important than anyone else and that’s how I intend to keep playing this game. Long live the furries (and all the other groups in SL).

On the issue of diversity, who is recommended for darker/ethnic skins… ? Many skin designers I find, simply seem to tint their light skins to produce darker ones.
1) So, who’s holding a gun to your head and forcing you to keep playing? If the love is gone, go.
2) Which skin stores have you *not* found? Nomine, M&R Cupcakes, Chai, TuLi, and Another Shop are the first five I can think of, and there are others, who recognize that skins run from pale to deep. I wish the shape generators allowed for more complex facial settings to permit for such options as flatter noses with flared nostrils and aquiline noses. This limits how ethnic you can look in the first place.
3) I don’t know what the specific slag was against the PoE hunt, but as the partner of one designer who spent hours getting the skins he’s distributing into a condition he considers saleable, I can certainly be sure others did the same. Oh, yes, I noticed one of the 400 so far has the same item in their globe as they do in one of their satellite stores. I’m no fan of that approach, either. But there’s no point in tarring multiple people with the same brush.
4) Your loss, dude. I have jewelry with a higher prim count than my furry avs.

Just for clarification, the POE secret was actually a positive one. It said something about how the poster didn’t have to shop anymore because they could get everything they wanted from hunts, or something. It had a picture of the POE poster in the background. The girl who organized the hunt/owned the IP on the poster asked that it be taken down and it was.

The skin also looks like that celebrity photo posted here not too long ago that was used in the sims and regrave skin. Surely not legal. Not saying that source was used for this particular skin it just looks like it. Either way its a very pretty skin
Iris, I saw secret #3 and imo it wasn’t entirely positive. They did say they didn’t shop any more because of all the free items, but then contradicted that statement by saying they threw most of it away.
I didnt see the #3 post as being negative at all either. I think it was unfortunate they used the POE graphic but the secret wasn’t slamming POE and was actually a message designers might need to see. It was basically just saying that they no longer actually BOUGHT things from Designers because everything in SL is free now, what with all the hunts, group gifts, etc. The big “secret” was that they joined groups and then left them just to get free stuff. I’m personally sick of hunts myself and not sure how they promote world peace but didnt see the secret as an attack to that particular hunt. *shrugs*
I throw away most of the hunt stuff too. I don’t expect people to keep the freebies/dollarbies I give if they aren’t ever going to wear them. Not many people have a use for tintable Meerkat tights.
I used to make my freebies/dollarbies no copy/trans, until not 3 months into opening shop someone bought 50 of them and resold them at her store for more money.
My secret (And I won’t even go anonymous): I wish I could trust people enough (again) to sell my dollarbies/freebies at no copy/trans so if someone didn’t like them it could be gifted to a new player.
The fact that so many of you are saying “Oh, you can try XYZ store for dark skins!” is proving #2′s point. One can go to *any* skin shop on the grid and buy a Caucasian skin, one cannot go to any skin shop and expect that a non-Caucasian skin will be available. Since I don’t wear Caucasian skins, I don’t see a need to spend my money in stores that won’t offer them.
And let’s be honest- a lot of the darker skins offered from some of the shops mentioned have really odd shading. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried on a demo to find a white stripe going down my nose. I’m no graphic artist, but what is that supposed to be? Light?
For this reason, I pretty much live in Sin Skins. Portia Sin offers a multitude of shading options, from very pale to very dark, and she also offers a drow option for you elves out there. I also think it’s interesting that some of the best darker skins out there for women are the Eloh skins- proof that it *can* be done!

I’ve known plenty of non-Caucasian avis during my time in SL. This just says more about the company you keep than the SL population.
As far as the other secrets are concerned:
1) Just have a “going out of business” sale and leave if that’s how you feel about it. If SL isn’t fun anymore, there’s no point in sticking around.
4) With all the hatred I see directed towards furries, I have to say that I have yet to meet a furry who was not a complete joy to be around. I admit that I don’t meet a lot of furries in my travels, but when I do they’re always mature, kind, and friendly. And no, I don’t think they’re any more lag inducing than any other fashionista wearing a gazillion prims and a facelight that lights up the whole sim.
5) Not really sure what to say about this one. I guess this is one of those cases where it’s easier to play along with the lie than tell the truth.
lol for peace on earth some of the prizes ‘your mom rated E for everyone’ are very peace and goodwill promoting.
all of these designers who were asked to put forward an example of their best creativity in the peace and nationality theme found their way to freebie dungeon to fill their globe. very original! So keep it in mind as you hunt, this is their best..apparently.
But it has to be said there are some wonderful wonderful prizes in the hunt, pink fuel, ivalde, kate mcglaglen, devilfish, pixie jewellery, fire good and many many more.
The organisation of the hunt was poor, it took me long enough to find the first globe after arriving at a telehub, one of many telehubs on the hunt, telehubs on a sim which has numerous globes. SL Best of Boulevard is quite the traffic trap too. Overall it is a hunt worth doing despite the stress.
I dont know about not having to buy things again….
It’s nice that ive got plenty of new dresses but how many times can you wear a dress with a Brazillian flag on it? lol. i havent come across a busy location akin to the ghost hunt earlier this year so either people are stuck or the interest in hunts is dwindling…

there ar NO empty locations – the globes are easy to find for anyone thats bothers to look and many folk found it fun.

most understand the words ‘ peace on earth’ a few like you will always moan and do nothing of any use
Gridwide hunts are, I imagine, quite the monster to organize, and really the organizers only have so much control over the hunt. The individual contributors are responsible for placing their hunt objects, so any complaints over ease of finding should be directed at the person responsible for placing that object. So, too, should any criticism of a prize be directed to the giver, not the hunt organizer.
But in a free hunt, when hunters needn’t offer up a single L$ for prizes, criticizing the quality of the prizes is pretty damned ballsy. Not everything may be to your taste, and you may have different standards for the items you purchase in SL, but if a hunt doesn’t seem worth your time/effort, just don’t participate.
It may take me a while to sort through the POE additions to my inventory, but I’m grateful to all the participants for their generosity even if I don’t keep all the prizes. Some prize that mightn’t be to my taste may be much-loved by another hunter, y’know?
I really really don’t get it why some ppl care so much about how one chose to live his/hers life in sl or real world. The hole purpose of SL is the alternative life living a place where to be free, to live your dreams without being judged, and yet even here in second life there is ppl that cant hold them self back and judge by appearances, and feels justified to judge the other.

I’m Asian. It took me forever to find an Asian skin. There are plenty out there that *SAY* they are Asian. Most of them are either Anime or they’re caucasian skins with some yellow tint to the point where I don’t know if they were tryingto make the skin look Asian or jaundiced. I lived with caucasian skins (and loved some) simply because that’s what I could find that was of an acceptable quality… till MMS introduced the Tokyo and Hong Kong lines. I wish there was a darker tone (they’re both very fair) but they are the best Asian skins I can find and I’ve worn them since the day they were introduced.
I am sure if the selection was available, others would sell… but I don’t fault the designers. I don’t know the demographics of the designers but I know if I was to make a skin, it would likely just turn out to be an Asian skin… that’s what I am used to.. that’s what I’m in IRL! If most of the designers happen to be caucasian, then I guess that’s what they’ll be drawn to creating… mostly. Its not racist or bigoted of them.

I am pretty sure that at least one of the stores you mentioned here only carries different shades of white. I have also seen designers who create costume packages for special holidays without so much a thought that maybe, just maybe other skin colors would like to dress up for this occasion too.
Skin designers don’t owe us skins. Be the first successful ethnic skin designer, if you cant find what you want. I say the first because I don’t know of any that are really raking in the big bucks from this so-called huge void in the market.
I don’t think new skin designers open their stores to appease the masses, they make what they feel comfortable with. When they make an effort it’s really pointless to complain about it, because they really don’t have to. They don’t have to give out free skins either.
It blows my mind that some people still can find a way to feel excluded from the Second Life market, when everyone can make their own content.

Interesting how two secrets relating to the diversity of SL came up this week. I can see the reasoning behind the skin issue, as it relates to the issue of showing diversity in real life. Anyone heard of the ‘paper bag test’?
As for furries, yes, a basic furry avatar probably has a lower ARC than some hair. But how many furries are just “basic”? I’ve seen a good number of furries that also have primtastic hair like non-furries. ARC is also only one measure, and I don’t think it looks as scripts, such as the ones that animate the eyes, mouth or tail. (I could be wrong on that, but it is a factor).
It’s also interesting to see how the word “dislike” was morphed into “hate”. Now, I know people that I’m not fond of, but I don’t having a seething loathing for them. But SCD comments tend to have a life of their own, anyways.
From all the hunts I’ve done, depriming helps, and it can be frustrating to see someone flying around with prim paws and prim head when the rest of us have been asked to remove our hair and other attachments.
I did say some had taken effort to make prizes. Some have and they’ve done a grand job of it.
others have gone to freebie warehouse, picked up what they can and stuffed it in the globe, not even their own creations as a prize. So yes i will diss the hunt for that. It’s people flouting the rules completely. They shouldn’t have been allowed to enter.
As for the organisation people still didnt have their globes on the day of the hunt so it WAS poorly organised you’d think the globes would hve been given out days even a week or so before the hunt took place.
Sure it’s picking up now but honestly what hunt location is busy? When compared to previous grid hunts. People can’t be bothered with badly organised events. I know you do work hard I’ve seen you hopping through the locations Beulah so you must know which people have put effort into their prizes, which prizes are good will and not-so-good will instead of looking at which blogs ‘moan’, why not fix the problems so there’s nothing to moan about?
There’s a terrible lack of diversity in skins, not only in colours but in types of skins especially mens, I’m not sure all the men on SL want to be hair free. It seems these days the majority just add some makeup from the eloah templates and push it off as the hottest new model skin purrrlhease!!
Furry avs are high arc and should be more considerate but then so should all those creators who think every item box should have a 1024 by 1024 texture on the front of it as an advert.

re: the POE Hunt; I think that it became a much larger hunt than organizers anticipated. I would like to commend them for the efforts they’ve put forth, because it is obviously not an easy task. The intent was to spread peace throughout the grid, but there’s always going to be complainers–just ignore the whiners.
I think it’s given a lot of designers (artists) the opportunity to showcase their items to many; and it’s given hunters the opportunity to experience stores and sims they might never have known about before.
I, myself, am grateful to all participants–organizers, hunters and designers. Although, I must admit, I’m on hunt overload, right now! (so much inventory to organize!)

2) I’m black and I wear mostly white to pale skins. Not because I am ashamed of my culture or that I dont like being black. I love being black, I love my mother, my sisters and all the different races in the world. In fact my daughter has all four of the worlds races in her.
I do somewhat agree with you. The black skins are always WAY to dark or have terrible make up. Lost thereian and minnu have lovely skins right now. All the asian skins look the same. But to be honest… it’s just a game.
I think there are a lot of different type of skins out there. You’re just not looking in the right spot.

Youre right, some of these stores just tint a more mainstream looking skin to a darker skin tone. But there ARE skins sourced from ethnic people. I already said:

Second skin, if memory serves me right, makes you purchase a whole pack so you may just want to check out chip midnight to see if he sells singles.
Why some skin stores only sell packs is beyond me.
I agree with everyone who is saying designers make what theyre comfortable with. Due to many shops having their own unique personality, i would have to agree with that. Not everyone is out to be some huge marketing guru. Many just do what they enjoy and enjoy making, this happens to be what they know about which may NOT be ethnic skins.
Making ethnic skins is like making menswear. You wont sell much so no one really does it *Shrugz*
Most people, unless they love it, probably will not spend 2 months making an ethnic skin when the return on it is only going to be $50 usd. as opposed to making a top notch “caucasion” skin and making $5,000 usd+
Instead of fussing you cant find an ethnic skin, go with what you can find and accessorise yourself and customize your shape to look more ethnic, youd be surprised with what you can achive.
I’d like to add this to the darker skin issue (again). To add to another poster the fact that you can’t go to almost every skin store and get a darker skin may be a problem for people seeking them. I’ve gotten most of my dark skins from Redgrave, Cupcakes and Laqroki but I’ve shopped at the vast majority on feeds and off. Those just happen to be the ones I like. I think that skin is one of the hardest things to purchase on SL. It’s one of the main things that determines what you look like on SL and also can be the most expensive. As I said previously it took me a month to find the skin I wanted. You still have to weed through bad or personally unliked skins like everyone else but there is a limited amount to look through.
I don’t want to tell anyone how to run their business. If a creator isn’t sure about shading for darker tones then I don’t blame them. I’ve never gone as far to say I won’t buy their other products but if I go there for the skin I’ll probably TP right out and keep searching for what I want. Yes if we really want it we could make our own skins but skin isn’t my forte so I leave it to the experts. I’ll just keep shopping at the experts who do it well and offer the shades that I want.

I’d like to know how much is really being made. The skin I had to change because everyone was wearing it was a Redgrave skin. I see a large number of darker skinned avi’s wearing Redgrave and they feature about 4 or 5 different darker shades along with the 2 or so asian ones. Why have they chosen to do so much darker skins? As far as “accessorising” and changing shapes I know personally if I don’t like a skin it won’t look good to me in any shape.
i have a few skins i shuffle between. my favs are a freebie one with freckles, a drow one, a cracked dolly skin and a few that are fantasy colored (blue, green and purple)
i love that sl can be about creating the you that you can’t be in rl. i don’t understand some judging others for their choices. if you’re not into them then don’t look.

Why does redgrave sell so many darker skins?? I guess people enjoy looking like they drank too much carrot juice because they are all super orange and freaky lookin’ (at least on my screen they are…
the lighter skin tones at Redgrave are ok.
I’m surprised that no one has recommended Skin Within (http://www.skin-within.com/).
Designer Ayesha Bisiani specializes in ethnic skins. I had occasion to meet her when I won a SL photo contest that had a free Skin Within skin as part of the prize package. I found Ayesha to be very pleasant and accommodating.
I think beauty is found in all skin shades, and it’s encouraging to have a skin designer like Ayesha on the grid who not only shares this view, but has devoted her line to it.

Don’t necessarily trash the organisers for the globes being late.
I have organised treasure hunts: you can get the ‘containers’ to vendors far, far ahead and there will *still* be people who put them out late, forget, etc.
Also, there will always be people who whinge about treasure hunts. Usually people who think they’re entitled to freebies.
That being said, if people really are putting stuff from freebie boxes in, the organisers should be told and the people concerned told to get the hell out of Dodge.

I just downloaded my stats from the SL site to see how many globes I have sold overall. Since the start of the hunt I have sold 2445! Thats about 144 people per day coming into my store.
its brilliant we had places not packed out – it all worked then, when a place isnt packed you can rez easier and look around the store properly.
Glad you got traffic and i hope at least some return as customers.I know the rest al say thers been alot of folk so the hunt did work and MANY did do it and 99.9% were happy.

I thought about Skin Within, but with all of the usual complaints on this topic about shading, I didn’t throw it out there. The shading on the body is the reason why I don’t own any from that store.

Sheesh.
I can’t believe I’m the only one seeing something awry there.
Cat, what do you see that is “awry”?
Well firstly the store owner of globe number one boasted over 1500 visitors on day one. She I believe, is also the organiser of said hunt.
So was she lying or have those people really struggled in the 16 days to make it through the chain to your store?
Secondly, 400 stores, huge names, people from all over the grid and such a low, low count. Many of the stores participating in the hunt have mailing lists far bigger than 2445! Some of the stores in the hunt would probably have near this amount of customers visit daily without a hunt taking place.
I have enjoyed what I’ve done of the POE hunt despite those people who didn’t seem to care what they put in their globe (ie, not even their own creations) but I do think the organisation was very, very lax making it difficult for people to complete and possibly resulting in a lack of interest by the masses. It doesn’t help that store owners are moving their globes. I remember going to one store in the #70s which had a sign which told me the globe was on the upper floor, when it was in fact out side of the store. I’m patient and continued on but I know many, many would not have.
Perhaps this is why in 16 days with over 400 stores participating you’ve only had near 2500 visitors.

Hunt prizes: thumbs up for those who actually followed the rules and made a peace on earth prize and down for those who went to freebie dungeon picked a few items up there and shoved it in the globe
Hunt organisation and ease to navigate: thumbs down
The only place I have seen a handful of hunters is at Best of SL where they’re so confused as the globes here don’t carry landmarks rather a notecard and even there it’s quiet.
And for the record, I didn’t post in the image here, nor did I even get the chance to see it before Iris had removed the piece.
@GoodGrief – To the best of my memory of my inventory, all of the stores I name do go to a dark brown. More than one are likely in the “tint the Northern European down to brown” zone discussed here, but my note to the secret submitter who insists that s/he’s not finding darker skins stands. S/he’s not looking. If I got one wrong, it was maybe Tuli, but she has a habit of only giving away European-range skin tones which may be skewing my memory.

Amen, amen, and amen. This goes for the prim hair and RP-specific HUD wearers as well. And the scripted wings. And the fur bits.
@ Cat – I’ve seen one globe in the 400 that had stuff that looked like a pile of full-perm freebies. I’ve seen more than one that was a recycled group gift, though, which I find almost as annoying. Especially when I’m already in the group. One store has the same freebie in a satellite store that they put in the globe in their main one. I saw that and was not impressed.
The POE hunt poster was in the background, and THAT’s why it was taken down?
That’s not a valid claim.
That would be like Coca Cola telling me to take down a photo I had on my RL flickr account because, incidentally, I’m drinking a coke in some summer photo.
The POE doesnt help a bit with traffic actually. Although the freebie hunters stop in to pick up their free stuff, they don’t remain long enough to register as traffic as the hunt organizers instructed the merchants to not hide the globes at all.. so its a quick in-in-out. Our traffic and sales BOTH have dropped during the hunt, and that is with about 150 globes a day being picked up. Bah Humbug. *throws Size 10 shoes at world leaders and freebies in general*

Yuh that is exactly how laggy stores get such high traffic. more lag = people staying longer to see the stuff . I think an avatar needs to be on the sim for around 10 minutes for it to register? Something like that.
Approx 150 globes a day = 150 more people in your shop, and your sales didn’t increase? Thats just proof hunts attract A) freebie mongers and/or B) people who wouldnt of bought the stuff anyway. Hunts benefit the community more than the shop owner, but thats not neccessarily a bad thing, its good to give.
If people are out to spend money, they’ll make a way to your shop and spend money. maybe at the least your shop was able to gain some new exposure even if people didn’t purchase..they werent out to purchase.
and for one who cares so much about IP rights why allow places like Hollywood Gestures to enter?
The issues of finding or not finding ethnic skins that you like on the grid: My personal experience – I did a LOT of skin search before finally buying one that I liked – and I just wanted a “plain” caucasian one (because that’s what I am) so if you’re picky on skins it can be a long search, regardless. the selection on ethnic skins IS smaller, yes – and first reason for that is undoubtably marekt demand – they don’t sell as well mostly
- but another reason – and one i find WAY more disturbing is something I learned talking in one of my groups a while back: Racism .. in a world where people walk around in blue, green and purpleskin, as furries and tinys – racism to my amazement STILL exists and is STILL aimed to a large degree against black people (I refuse to call them african-americans because they are not all americans!!)
- the comments are nasty and I wont quote but one! This one was said to a girl who is black in RL and because of that chose to use an black skin in SL as well- “There’s no need for you to run around looking like a stupid nigger – I’m sorry you can’t afford a decent skin – here – have a freebie skin from me!! it’s WHITE!!” – this said by a girl with feline ears, tail AND paws – nope not making this up.
So – in my opinion the REAL problem isnt the difficulty in finding good ethnic skins – the real problem is racism.
Instead of ragging on those skinners that admit they dont know how to do an ethnic skin in a good enough quality and therefor do not offer them – aim your sharp pens at the intolerant ones, the racists
Be who you are – or be who you want to be – that is one of the great things about SL – we can do both – and as long as your choice harms no one – it is still YOUR choice
- oh – hmm – and on a sidenote – we, as in the POE vendors – are NOT all huge famous stores for whom the POE hunt is just another drop in an already huge ocean – enough said on that subject
Kira, The POE poster was not “in” the background. The POE poster was used as the background with text on top. A better analogy would be if you grabbed a Coke logo from the internet and added text then uploaded to your Flickr acct. The person with IP rights did have a valid claim.
Sidenote: The hunt has increased my traffic a lot even though people arent staying very long.

I think the whole point here, is someone (CAT), is complaining because, obviously, they are not included in this as a designer but, that of a shopper.
I have noticed, that with many “complainers”, of the FREE 0L hunts, are the ppl that are jealous.
They are saddened that they can not contribute so they try to make the designers feel that they are unworthy.

poor Cat. she just got reemed in the name of Peace on Earth. I AM a Designer in the POE hunt and its done nothing but hurt my sales. Yeah yeah yeah.. hunts are FUN.. whoooHooo!! But how many of you out there with real jobs would do it for free? Not so “fun” nor does it promote peaceful warm fuzzy feelings. There are other ways to reward faithful customers but let’s face it, giving away free stuff isnt’ making us all want to hold hands and sing “We are the World’, we are the People.” Stick that in your size 10 shoe and throw it.
No I’ve not dissed the DESIGNERS at all, especially not the ones who’ve taken the time to actually DESIGN something.
If you were a designer who has contributed something OF YOUR OWN to the hunt i have NO PROBLEM with you, even the one’s who’ve contributed all of two alpha textures to make a ‘rose bush’ prize, you still took the time to create something and that’s great.
My gripe is those who HAVE NOT designed anything for the hunt and put items they DIDN’T CREATE into their globe, ie, full perm freebies easily obtainable anywhere, nothing SPECIAL for this SPECIAL PEACE ON EARTH HUNT.
So yes if your prize was a ‘suicide boat’, a tee dissing my mother, an illegal sound snippet put into a gesture but you still took the time and effort to make something and show your ‘goodwill’ in this hunt i have NO ISSUE with you. If you’ve NOT CREATED your prize item, NOT DESIGNED ANYTHING then yes i do have a problem with you. I hope that is clear now.
My other gripe is with the organisers as the organisation has been sloppy from day one. A difficult hunt won’t help anyone gain shoppers. If someone is angry because the chain is broken in front of them they certainly won’t feel positive looking around your store, they will want to whiz through the chain as fast as possible as a ‘designer’ you surely understand this.
If people can’t even get to your store to see your items, how on earth are you going to have new shoppers? lol….

About the racism/diversity comment, here’s a novel idea:
YOU spend the time making your skin and YOU create the diversity.
After all, anyone can create in sl.
If your creations aren’t good enough, quit complaining.
It’s not the designer’s responsibility to cater to your whim. Plennnnnty of skin designers do custom work if it’s really that important.
In short, if you ever feel like complaining about what is available in sl do me and the rest of the residents a favor:
Shut up and create what you like, others may thank you for it.

Okay a few things
A) To designers complaining about freebie mongers. Yeah, some people are just gonna grab it leave and never return, but at the same time when you put out a freebie, you’re displaying the quality of your product. Put out a good product people just might notice that its *high quality* and come back to check your ish out. I know I do, and I did that even before I joined the ranks of the fashion blog world. The freebie is like a first impression, if that impression is good you’re going to pique interest, and that may result in sales.
B) I generally agree with the “it was free don’t complain” mantra so many people have. At the same time though, when I’ve spent a lot of time in a store on a hunt, only to find myself laden down with crap I have to throw away? Fuck you. I spent my time, and I myself find that to be a commodity, so yeah I *DID* pay for it. Also reference point A, you’re better off being slightly generous with the quality of your freebies.
P.S. Does this diversity issue mean I get to hate one designers that think that “pale” means “locked under the stairs for 10 years”, I would like SOME pigment dammit, I just don’t want to be tan
But at the same time, I was able to find designers that are able to do it, I just understand that not all designers are capable of it.

I understand where #4 is coming from, but dude – furries lag too. I’d rather listen to people complain about my outfit rather than change, seeing as changing lags me something fierce. To me, there’s nothing worse than being in a crowded place and being half-changed. Add some lag to that, so you stay half-changed/rezzed, and voila.
Yeah.
In short, I understand, but I’m not going to change because I don’t want to be picked at for being half-rezzed.
If worse comes to worse though, and you lag that badly, TP away. If worse comes to worse and I start lagging badly, I’ll TP away and change.
