You may or may not have already heard about the new Client Detection System by Skills Hax which is supposed to find residents using ‘illegal’ viewers in your store and ban them, therefore eliminating ripping in all its forms!
Protect your investments and join the battle against copyright infringement. The Gemini CDS detects all known viewers with copybot/griefing functionality without utilizing channel listeners, !quit spamming or other inferior techniques.
Detection works SIM-WIDE, meaning you can rez it thousands of meters in the air if you’d like, it has to be on the parcel where you want to execute bans though, and it has to be yours or your group’s land. With no probes or sensors, it is virtually lag-free.
With a simple menu system and 1-click installation process, the CDS is an orb-like device, rezzable on your land. As soon as an avatar connects to your region information is being requested from a team of bots with special abilities, connected to a database server off-sim.
If detected and identified as harmful, the avatar is being teleported home and banned from the parcel automatically (Estatebans are a planned feature). Avatars will stay in the database forever and treated as potentially harmful, even after returning to a harmless viewer. It is a networked system so banlists are shared automatically and users can benefit from each other.
All the heavy-lifting and calculations are processed outside of the grid leaving CDS lag-free and secure. So far there hasn’t been a single reported false positive. The technique is not something that can cause false positives without the user intending to do so, it detects harmful viewers with a success rate over 80% (per SIM!) but IF one gets detected it is absolutely accurate. If someone claims they never used an illegitimate client, feel free to IM me inworld and i will give you details. Do keep in mind that the system stores information and has been running already for months just gathering data.
Also note: viewers like the LL Viewers, Emerald, Meerkat, Kirsten’s, Imprudence, Restrainedlife and all the other legit viewers (clients respecting permissions and without griefing tools) will never be affected by this. Should you believe you have been wrongfully banned by the Client Detection System, you can file an appeal.
I have my doubts…
not a single false positive? Â There has been lot’s of talk on plurk and the forums trying to establish how/what/where/who etc about this system, with Skills herself giving conflicting information regarding it, with a comment on Tuesday which implied she was trolling and creating drama to increase sales.
I personally believe that this system is next to worthless, serious rippers have already rewritten their viewers, and the hype is preying  on the real fear of creators.  If this system does collect data from customers (which Skills keeps contradicting herself about), without their knowledge, and stores it, is it hypocritical for merchants to defend themselves by invading paying customers privacy?

A possible false positive:
http://rors-rags2riches.blogspot.com/2010/02/i-have-been-banned.html
I personally do not trust systems like this, banlink, and the JLU’s BRAINIAC.
I am in two minds about this. Arora Ror, claims here http://rors-rags2riches.blogspot.com/2010/02/i-have-been-banned.html to have been banned when she’s innocent, but does not dispute anywhere that I can see that at some point she logged in using a ripper viewer. She’s a freaken polyanna and not to bright, but I doubt she’s a ripper. why she used a ripper viewer, who knows.
On the other hand, if you have never used a ripper viwer, what the hell do you have to worry about. I’ve never used one ever, never even looked at one, so I don’t give two hoots about this device.
I also doubt it’ll stop rippers for long.
Next time you want to use my name and accuse me of being a “Polyanna” or being “not too bright”…how about you have the balls to do it on my blog and not on some site you think I won’t find. I did in fact say that I was not and never had used the neillife viewer. I also had substantial proof that I was not around at the time this alleged detection took place. All of this information was passed on to Skills, who upon reviewing it, removed my name. Yes my blog was out there and drama queen worthy. But had you been in my position I’m sure you would have been mighty pissed and probably sprouted off as well. Just get your facts straight before you go talking about people Baily. I had the balls to stand up and fight for my name. Something which I have heard a lot of other people have not done. My name was dragged through the mud already over an incident that was proven wrong and unjust. How about we leave it alone and move along now?
sorry Anonymous, didn’t read your post before I posted
one more thing, Skills Hax, translates to me as Skilled Hacker, she says you can trust me….oh sure, with a name like that, why wouldn’t I!
Someone finally delivers a solution detecting more than cryolife and suddenly the some of the anti content theft folks get pissed off. OK.
Let’s see how LL does with their new third party client policy (that might put skills out of business too). I have no expectation of the historically copy leftist Linden Lab raising a finger to do anything except wave their policy around in front of a judge during a lawsuit.
Meanwhile right or wrong the detection of and exposure of all alts of rippers is priceless material. Anyone else see that partial list that was in google cache?
Truth, I have to agree, it is somewhat ironic that they’re all whining about this device, when they’ve been crying out for protection.
What partial list, list of what, rippers?
thats the thing, Im all for solutions but Skills said some pretty scary things on the SLU link i posted, that pc data is taken, and there is a database of all people scanned by her system.
Oh it is a long list from the detection database that has the date, time, location, viewer, avatar name, and in a number of cases all the known alts for that avatar (which is what is making people go wtf?) I’m not sure I want to post it.
Hmm haven’t looked at that thread, if she’s collecting pc data that can’t be legit
whether or not its true, i don’t know but for her to say it, then retract, then allude to it again is a big red flag for me.
So anyone who can comment on this thing, anyone using it?
I just read the thread, what a moaning bunch of over analytical geeks that lot are!
Although some valid points were made
It seems to me that Ana Lutetia was having some problems with this… I’ll have to ask her for more clarification.
However, I have serious problems with any resident generated program that can pull my IP and various other identifying factors. SERIOUS problems. If LL had developed this… fine. They already have my information. But someone in SL grabbing my IP? Creator or not… no. I don’t like this. LL needs to be fixing the problem, not a resident named, of all things, Skills Hax.
Just curious, what difference is there between a program that pulls residents IP’s and blog statistics that lets residents IP’s be known?
I’ve read many times SCD saying they know who commenters are because they have a list of IP’s and it’s always said in such away that implies “we know who you are”.
Doesn’t seem much different to me.
its your choice to post to SCD, its not my choice to be scanned without my knowledge
True, but I don’t see anywhere on SCD that states you have access to everyone that posts IP addresses. Shouldn’t we all be made aware of this before posting?
Sorry if it is stated somewhere and I missed it.
if you comment on any website, you post your ip to the admin, its a well known fact, im not a techni computer bod, but i know that. This system however tracks you in some sims sims, you dont know if its happened or not, that was the point i was trying to make.
For some reason, the release of product instantly concerned me. My first reaction was that this is something that LL should be implementing, not a random SL resident. Then, I worried about the possibility of an innocent person being detected and banned (which happened).
What began to really turn me off this product, though was the behavior of the creator on the SLU forums. I found it to be shocking. This person does not strike me as someone who is all that trustworthy, and at the same time is in a position to play judge, jury, and executioner.
But ultimately, what bothers me the most is that this is just like placing a band aid on an ulcer.
Well anyone can and already does scrape your data but you don’t know about it or it is painted as “business intelligence” so you don’t mind.
This reveals people with criminal intent and could expose their entire carefully constructed criminal enterprise so people get mad.
Got it.
And LL still won’t do shit about copybotters. What are they going to do? Fire all lindens hired before 2008 and polygraph the rest?
I dont think this system ever is mistaken, if it is itl be less than 1 in 10,000, & Il take that risk. Plus Skills is taking Appeals now. I just hope she isnt bullied out of SL, shes being attacked In-World and on forums daily, its sad. What most are missing is its the people using copybot viewers/selling them/creating then who are most emphatically employing scare-tactics in all the forums to put people off getting it because theyre terrified of where this is going for them. They dont want their free-ride/money maker/power trip ending anytime soon. Sounds like people are falling for it too, which is sadly predictable. I dont believe the arguments posited against it are worth anything compared to the good it does, (Im not sure where this weird panic about omg it might be accessing my ip address-so what? lots of things do) and happily all the other designers that I know personally in SL think the same. We are tired of being bullied by copybotters who like to play SL like theyre RL mafia. Skills Hak knows the score, shes seen it all & because of that shes the most qualified person for the job. All I can say is shes got more balls than most of us. And this is the thanks she gets.
Tenshi I usually agree with you but Im really disappointed this time.
I wrote it, not Tenshi, and disappointed? in what exactly, skills herself has said some outrageous things over the past few days, and although im anti-theft, i had worries about this system, not because of anything I heard or anything I knew, but because of Skllls own statements.
