On Lynch Mobs

Earlier this week something happened within the Second Life community that made me disgusted with online people. I am not going to mention the root of the incident, nor will I be mentioning many if any names. However, I am going to be making a commentary on the behavior of almost everybody involved.

Person A discovered that Person B was using a piece of ripped furniture that Person A had created. Now grant it, Person B was using it for a charity and I suppose since there was no profit made off of the item in question it will not be the end of the world. It is still in question whether or not Person B even was aware said item was ripped.  However, when Person A complained about the ripped item being used as is their right…well to quote a favorite album of mine. “Out Came The Wolves”

What followed after the complaint was made was some of the biggest bullshit I’ve ever had the displeasure to witness since joining Second Life. People came out of the woodworks to attack Person B, who I believe had actually apologized. That wasn’t enough for the jackals though. Not nearly enough. Several Plurks later with over a hundred comments we began to discover the nature of some of the peanut gallery. Some of them were staunchly defending their friend because the person has been stolen from, some had a previous issue with Person B and decided that would be the time to pull out the knives (Oh hey Phoenix Chapman).  Some of the peanut gallery decided to jump in for the sake of the lulz. Maybe their mommies didn’t love them as a child and they desperately needed the attention but really, who knows?

One of the more vocal proponents of the lynching is a skin maker, who just about a year ago had admitted to ripping body parts in the process of making their skins. Said person apologized for it once called on it and all was forgiven. If I remember correctly the entire public process involved one public plurk with a bunch of comments (most of them saying “Oh it is okay, it is big of you to apologize and we forgive you”) but a year later, all is forgiven. Why in this case was there a double standard? Was it because said skin maker is more popular than Person B?

I know I have been guilty of this behavior in the past in case any of you decide to point out my hypocrisy. But this being a new year I am going to try very hard to not engage in that behavior. Call it turning over a new leaf or what you will.

But you will probably ignore this. You will continue to jump on the bandwagon whenever somebody screws the pooch and feel loved and appreciated as you railroad person after person with your “friends”. I hope you have fun doing it too. Sooner or later however you will be on the receiving end and sad to say, you’ll deserve it. But in the meantime just keep looking like this to everybody who is on the outside looking in.

*fashion credits removed due to the fact that after thinking about it, it was indeed completely inappropriate and tacky*

About Dancien

Dancien (or God-Emperor Fabulous as he is known in his native tongue) is just here to point and laugh and tell you when you’re fucking wrong (which is a lot by the way). He is also waiting for the mothership to come back and pick him up. He enjoys long walks on the beach, critiquing pornography, kicking cute woodland creatures in the balls and most of all, making you cry.

  1. Beulah Mills says:

    well thought out post

  2. Saffia Widdershins says:

I’m appalled at your use of the final image. It devalues what was a thoughtful and well-argued post.

You are using the tragedy of two real people’s murdered corpses for .. what? Shock value?

And to follow it with a shopping list of stores is quite simply grotesque.

    • Lourdes Denimore says:

Actually he is using the picture as an example of a lynch mob. Lighten up.

    • Dancien says:

The picture at the end of the post was a last minute decision to illustrate how everybody looked from the outside looking in. When I did a google search for images of Lynch mob my choices were A: Bad Bad Hair Metal Band or B: Much more graphic and unsettling pictures. The “shopping list” on the end is due to the fact that Wednesdays are supposed to be my “fashion” posts and I figured if I didn’t credit the makers there would be another dust up over how I am somehow disrespecting content creators in Second Life.

The placement of both makes it look worse that it was intended and for that I apologize.

    • Are you serious “Saffia”? Oh Please….I have had my share of words with Dancien but I do not believe he is trying to diminish the situation depicted in the picture. Instead I argue you are trying to diminish his words with this ridiculous accusation and deflect the situation back onto him. Grow up!

  3. Thema Felix says:

I absolutely agree with Saffia on your use of lynching in this way. You don’t need to hyperbolize a Second Life situation in this way.

And I notice you did use one person’s name.

  4. Gabie Glam says:

“Lalala oh I like the look, cute piucture OMFG WTF IS THAT!”

Here is the funny thing, I know who you are talking about, she is a sweet and nice person and I am sure it was all a big mistake. Are you really surprised that something like this would happen on plurk

The skin maker who you are talking about (If I remember the plurk) was using SOURCES as another skin maker, she even showed how she used someone nose in one of her skins (I think it was Leona lewis).

The difference was, it was in her own plurk, she come out with it herself, the drama and the OMFG came out in persons B and other people’s plurks. Maybe if Person A showed where she got the botted items to prove that it wasn’t her maybe it wouldn’t have been so drama llama. To my knowledge she didn’t. Which is odd because if I was accused of copybotting and those were from a sculpt kit I would prove that I didn’t know and show the source of the kit.

  5. Katey says:

… Are you seriously complaining about lynching? Bullying? Taking sides? Seriously?

You’d do well to read the popular skin maker’s photography tutorials. Anti alias won’t try to make you leave your basement, you don’t need to be scared of it. Composing your photos properly is ok too, unless you’re aiming for… that.

While I may agree with parts of what you’ve said (to paraphrase, don’t be a dick), that it is you saying it is almost as funny as the photos littered throughout the post.

    Hypocrisy =/= new leaf.

    • Dancien says:

Thank you for comment Katey, I didn’t know you still read SCD. It’s nice to know we have such loyal readers.

(Also, my anti aliasing is turned up to 8x. Must be your monitor perhaps?)

      • Katey says:

I was linked via a plurk that was similarly disgusted.

Also, your photos are jagged as hell. Maybe a better graphics card?

        • Dancien says:

I’m running 3 Nvidia GTS 450′s. I do use phoenix to take my snapshots and I’ve been told that there are jagged issues with that viewer. Thanks for your advice! :)

  6. Otenth Paderborn says:

The use of a photo of an actual, racially-based lynching to illustrate anything in Second Life drama is disgusting.

  7. I still contend that situations such as this should are best addressed first privately and if the person fails to respond then by all means -name and shame. Unfortunately the content creator didn’t feel the need to go this route and instead chose to use the court of public opinion and use the oh so rational folks on plurk as the jury. Well sadly it backfired. I just hope going forward the content creator will see this as a lesson learned and next time do things a bit differently.

  8. Gabie Glam says:

Still after being shamed and named why not try to prove innocents, Unless there is none there.

    • Dancien says:

The problem with that Gabe is that it went straight to the court of public opinion. Can you really prove innocence there?

      • Gabie Glam says:

If she came out and showed what sculpt kit it came from or told us who gave it to her and said she didn’t know it won’t have been so bad.

        • Dancien says:

You have a point Gabe. She could have handled that much better than she did. However, I guess some people handle confrontation differently.

  9. Colleen says:

And how did it backfire Lizzie? It’s easy to stand aside and look down your nose at how situations are “supposed to be handled”, but what do you do when you are absolutely fed up! When it has happened to you then you are allowed to tell anyone how to handle anything, until then take a seat and be quiet.

    • It turned into a circus is how it backfired. Lets look at this from a RL perspective…the company I work for holds a patent on the technology we sell. So say some other company comes out with a product exactly like ours do you really think the CEO of my company is going to jump on Twitter and accuse this other company of violating patent law? No…he would first handle it privately via lawyers then at the appropriate the information would be released to the public.

So my question is to you Colleen…did you try and contact her first and allow her ample time to respond before going on plurk? Cause if that was the case, I apologize.

  10. You’re going to try very hard to not engage in bad behaviour, yet you call me out by name for defending my friend who has been ripped – again – for her right to complain about the theft? Come the fuck on. Either you’re not going to do it, or you are. Though of course, I’ve seen you attack one person or the other over and over again, so I guess I should be proud that I’ve reached this illustrious peak in SL of celebrity.

For the record, despite my feelings about *anyone* in SL, I don’t go out of my way to cause trouble with them. Keira and I have never gotten along, but we ignore each other and it works. However, you do my friends wrong, and I will staunchly defend them. So she apologized for using botted furniture, and having access to the account that botted it *her story, and I’m being generous by even allowing her that*. So what? Doesn’t mean Colleen has to forgive her, or that anyone else does either.

Colleen has been ripped off for three years and she always takes the high road and no one finds out about it. But she instead decided to complain on her private plurk timeline, as is her right, and calls out someone who has no real excuse for it. If Keira can be defended up and down for her behaviour, and people can make Colleen feel bad for making that plurk venting her frustration, so can I have the right to defend my friend. My not liking Keira prior to this doesn’t negate my right to defend my friend, and I’ll continue to do so, even posting here in this cesspool to do so.

And it’s in piss-poor taste to show pictures of yourself (what the fuck do you have to do with anything), and ESPECIALLY pictures of a lynch mob. It’s downright disgusting for you to equate a horrifying event like lynching with an SL drama like this. DISGUSTING.

    • Dancien says:

Thank you for your comment Phoenix. It’s nice to know we have such loyal readers here in our little cesspool.
I have changed the picture in question as I realized after some consideration that it was indeed inappropriate and in bad taste.

    • Dancien says:

Also, I seem to remember in Oct 2008 you were involved something similar. Your blog is gone but references to it still remain.

    • Melanie says:

Just wanted to correct something; her timeline was not private at the time. I was able to view and respond on the plurk threads being referenced here, so it was very much public. It has since been converted to a private timeline, tho. That’s all!

  11. Emleigh says:

    LOL pot? meet kettle.

  12. Emerald Wynn says:

Aw, c’mon Dancien! Name names! ;)

    Plurk is evil.

  13. Catero says:

Although directly contacting the “offender” keeps everything under wraps it’s not required. No one is obligated to inform someone of an offence before making it public.

I certainly didn’t when I told my world via in-person, Facebook/Twitter status what a big douche Hewlett Packard is.

Also, Lizzie, this is far from a situation of company-to-company relations. I know it’s hard for you to be relevant, but sit down. Your purported expertise in public relations is laughable to anyone who has had the misfortune of being directed to your blog dramas. When you can keep together a personal breakdown without slathering the dirty (and incoherent) details on the feeds people may start to take what you have to say seriously.

    • I do appreciate your feedback in regards to my own behavior and am well aware of my mistakes but that doesnt make my opinion any less valid. We all learn from our idiotic deeds and hopefully move forward from them.

I don’t really understand your comment about Twitter and whether or not you are alluding to being someone connected to HP because the writing is not very clear (sorry). Now you may be saying you bought an HP product and are dissatisifed for someone reason, thats different. A consumer has the right to express their dissatisfaction how ever they see fit. But I am not talking about “buying” a product, I am referring to the company twittering things of this nature. Now if you indeed work for HP or another tech company, which is what I am referring to in my example, I would be careful about what you twitter – I’ve been in “your world” long enough to see friends lose their jobs over such things as you are alluding too. Ranting about company drama via twitter is pretty damn stupid particulary if the company is tech based such as HP, Dell or the company I work for- they find out who is saying what pretty easily. But the issue at hand is lynch mobs on social networks and how these things get out of hand. I was simply offering my perceptions on how situations like this could be avoided in the first place.

    • “Also, Lizzie, this is far from a situation of company-to-company relations. I know it’s hard for you to be relevant, but sit down.”

Isn’t she implying another business owner in SL has copybotted items of hers? I guess you are saying that “The Loft” is not a business and what the other person does in sL isn’t a business either. Therefore professional behavior should not be expected. So if that’s what you are indeed saying then I stand corrected! It certainly isn’t a business issue then, MY BAD!

  14. Gidge says:

Are we picking on Lizzie now?

  15. ALERT says:

    LYNCH MOB ALERT.
Let’s pick on Lizzie because it’s easy.

  16. moira says:

Taking pleasure in someone’s pain is a cause for pause. And an opportunity for some serious self-evaluation. Here an opportunity presents itself for them to focus on the shortcomings of another while removing the attention from their own. Usually these people are miserable and highly self critical and the thought of you also being miserable gives them a sick saticfation in the knowledge that they’re not alone. Remember misery loves company.
