Emleigh is E-Social

Hello everyone! This is my debut post at Shopping Cart Disco, and I couldn’t be more honored to join the amazing staff already in play here. I’ve been tapped to cover all the society, and event aspect here.

My post today is going to be centered around the Hotel Dare community.

The Hotel Dare

The original Hotel Dare was created in April of 2008. I remember this Hotel Dare, as I was introduced to it through a mutual friend of Gattina Dumpling’s and I. It was one of the more stunning, and detailed builds I had seen on the Grid. Gattina explains that she wanted an environment where different Second Life artists could each design a room and showcase their talent and art in a hotel setting.

The newest add-on to Hotel Dare features the work of Ray Caesar, a real life artist whose work is all created in Maya. Several talented people on the grid (Daniel Luchador, Katat0nik Pidgeon, Marie Lauridsen, Autumn Hykova, Helianthus mesmer, and Leetah Moxie) brought to virtual life, with Ray’s permission, his art.

Gattina, elaborating further, explains that Second Life is an amazing medium that allows people a chance to experience art in an interactive, three-dimensional way. It also gives Real Life artists a chance to reach a wider audience who may have not been familiar with their work.

The exhibit of Ray’s art also includes interactive rooms that take you inside his work. I’d include pictures of the spectacular rooms, but it’s really something you should check out for yourself. It’s just like you’re walking into the paintings and into his mind!

Also included at this location are shops, including Chapeau Tres Mignon, Katat0nik, Yip’s, and Milk Motion.

The elder, but no less spectacular Hotel Dare, located on the Poetik velvets Sim (slurls to both locations at the bottom), features works of Trevor Brown, which are copyrighted and used with his explicit permission.

The art showcased at this location is perhaps not suited for those faint of heart. It’s imaginative, artistic, and almost at the line of disturbing. It’s a different point of view than Ray Caesar’s, but no less beautiful.

Trevor focuses mostly on medical art. Subjects of his works almost always have cuts and bruises and medical accessories. Here, also, there is an interactive room where you can play medical examiner, cower in fear, or get friendly with a skeleton.

Wow! So cool to see Ray Caesar’s work in SL. I actually used to work with Ray, briefly, when I co-oped straight out of design college at a Toronto Hospital. I have followed his career on an off since then and his talent never fails to amaze me. Congrats to Ray, and to Emleigh on a great post!

  7. Raven Haalan says:

Hey, welcome! This is such a cool idea. News on goin’s on – I so can’t keep up and plug in – one stop shopping would be fantastic. I love it.

The focus on art, events, the creative side… wow… keep it comin!

    Excellent post, Emleigh.

Hotel Dare sounds intriguing and as I love all to do with creativity and the arts, in sl as well as rl, this is now at the top of my list for immersive cool places to visit when I am able.

I had heard of it, but didn’t realize until your post how great it will be. Thanks for this. I look forward to seeing more gems uncovered!

    And welcome! :)

I’m so excited that Gattina gets permission from the artists to replicate their works in another manner. That’s so respectful and kind I’m nearly in tears, given how SL normally treats artists, lol… ah, I’m a sap. I still need to visit the new Hotel Dare – I don’t want to visit on my laptop and see things half-rezzed!

Congrats Em and thank you for the nice post!

And yes, we do everything with permission from the artists, they see the work as it is created, I send them images and ask opinions etc. It’s very exciting for me because as an art fan I am able to work with a lot of my heroes and expose people to their work on sl. I have an amazing team at The Hotel Dare and I couldn’t do this without them, all I really do is arrange it all and leave the heavy lifting to others. I am very lucky to have people like Kat and Marie with me because we love the same artists and share the same visions and they are both sooooo talented, as is Daniel. We have some other really cool things on the sim, JoJorunoo Runo made an incredible space and Fishy Strawberry has a store that is NOT a store, Callie has Cal-Martâ„¢, and we have lots of fun stuff.

Thanks so much Emleigh and look forward to reading more!

  11. yay! nice post, em. hotel dare wins.
