I’m currently in the quad of Hair Fair sims, sponsored by Rezzable. Navigating the sims this year are like attempting to run through a bunch of Jell-o. Of course, it was that way last year but this year seems to be especially hard on connections and servers. I found what part of the problem is – at least, in the south-west quadrant of the Pink sim.
Yes, the display sure looks nice, but look at all of the prims being used. This is a gluttonous use of prims in a sim dedicated to charity. Attempting to cruise on by this booth practically puts your avatar at a stand-still.
Unfortunately, I have to call this one an Epic Fail. And right next door is another problem…
Sculpties are not the solution in this situation guys. You have to be low on everything to make the sim navigable to so many avatars crushing in at once.
These displays are truly FOF. I’m sure I’ll find more as I go on, but these were the ones that stood out the most at the moment.
And one question… what’s with all the empty booths? Was it planned for more vendors, or was there simply not as many as last year? I’ve been through two sims so far and have counted about seven empty booths.

I am fairly disappointed in the HUGE amount of sculpty badness going on there as well, seeing as i have a fairly crap comp. Looks good in loads of pics ive seen, but i can barely get any vendors to rez!

Well also understand even if all avatars remove prims/aos/scripted items, whatever there’s still the server straining under the load of the avatars. Then there’s the textures used in the builds- those need to load, plus the sculpt textures need to load. There’s a myriad of variables when it comes to ‘lag’ as far as Hair Fair is concerned.
I rather liked Miriel’s restrictions on Jewelry Expo. She understands in general the difference between client side and server lag. Even last year, when tons of avatars were there, it wasn’t as bad for me as this was. Now that’s just opinion.

First of all there were only 2 sims last year where there are 4 this year…maybe once again you should consider research before you open your mouth…Second each participant was given a set amount of prims to use for their booths smalls got 200, med got 300 and large got 400…There were many participants that used close to their maximum……You say “This is a gluttonous use of prims in a sim dedicated to charity” (which i think is the most retarded statement out of all the things that could have been said)…I think its been what a week?…since you have tried to start trouble with someone so you must be needing a fix and decided to make the Hair Fair your victim….Considering that yes, this is a charity event this makes you pretty damn petty to try and bring negativity around it and the ppl who tried so hard to promote, build, organize and participate in it to gather funds for it…..Whats the deal you try to get your alt in the fair and you missed out?….or were you just bored?
Yes there are four sims this year , but in answer to the less vendors, no, there are nearly double the vendors participating this year than last year, you even did a post on the numbers at last years yourself, I actually had the link for reference for this years as I loved your enthusiasm.
Why are there empty booths? because some people had too much going on and pulled out last minute, just like any fair that takes a long time to organise you can commit at the beginning and RL happens.
Each of the four sims has max 6K + prims being used , 6k + is the highest one is nearly a thousand less, the vendors were all given guidelines on textures to load, but when prim limits were handed out it was based on a basis of making sure that all vendors had enough no matter what amount of colour packs they sold.
We can only encourage people to deprim , we cannot make them do it, as for so many sculpties , there are very few vendors using them in displays , but we did say people could decorate, as last years fair people had the plain three walls and created mini shops , you will remember that if you were there adding all sorts of detailing to stand out and make their stalls memorable, so this year they wanted to do the same.
Washu made an incredible build in theme hoping that many wouldn’t feel the need to, and many didn’t, and those that did have done a nice job of it, should we have said no sculpties, I am not sure, as last year sculpties didn’t exist in SL so it wasn’t something to deal with. Did we forget about things like glow, well for me personally I know I did , again I am not a builder so these things don’t always come to mind.
In refering to other fairs, they have all been incredible, but with hair fair there is a difference, demos probably play a huge part in what is happening , don’t quote me as I am not a builder and don’t know exactly what is what when it comes to lag , and yes there are myths but we are trying our hardest to make it as painless as possible, even going so far as to put the demos out on onrez prior, mind you the impact of that kind of killed onrez

Anyway aside from all of that I hope that once it settles down people can return and enjoy , the positive feedback has far outweighed the negative and nothing to do with Charity is ever an ‘epic fail” you got really great pics of the fair maybe the next post as this was stated to be the “First Coverage” will be about the great hair you find, I am loving seeing the different styles people go for. Also hope you remembered to grab some bandanas for Bandana Day.

When I first read speculation that the new ability to see Avatar Rendering Cost might lead to ARC restrictions on events, I groaned, but after the Hair Fair and the inconsiderate folks who came there, I am rethinking that. I don’t think folks need to go naked (like I did) but there were dozens of people over 2000 in ARC. One woman was over 6200 and that was before she got out her sword. One woman who was around 2400 was complaining so loud and long about the lag as though only she were experiencing it, while poofing smoke particles and blinging like a Christmas tree.
I don’t think the build itself is the problem, although some people DID go overboard….sculpty blobs staying unrezzed don’t look too good. The sims in general look cool with the Mayan theme-something different I guess.
The problem are those idiots who come all primmed-out-blinged out and loaded with scripts. I saw people with ARCs of 7,000! And that doesn’t even include the scripted stuff like AO’s and the like. I had an ARC of 1, no scripts, no AO, no Mystitool.
I think Sasy covered a lot of it. We let designers design their booths how they wished, however there was a restriction on using complex scripts. The donation script being an exception.
I decided to leave them up so they could be filled with other decorations or the donation kiosks. There were also a few designers who came in last minute, and I was very happy to have space for them.
For the build itself, I used very few prims and the same 4 or 5 textures, so the basics loaded without trouble. However some of these efforts went to waste because it turned out that we were next to other sims that were full of textures.
The biggest factor on lag and load is the avatar count on the sims. We’re unable to do anything about the high avatar count or the choice/right that people have to wear what they wish while shopping.
Oh – There is one big reason for the empty booths. I built too many.
A good way to get thru the swamp-air of the laggy sims is to sit on a prim and move it around with you. That will reduce a lot of frustration. I hope that helps!
I flew about (bald, shoeless, etc) and used “disable camera constraints” which made picking up free stuff easier. (Hey, I have too much hair as it is.) Actually shopping there, well, I decided I could just visit people’s shops if I liked the free stuff I got.
I want to thank you Sasy, for letting us know at the Hair Faire about the ARC. I didn’t know about it before, and even though I wasn’t all scripted out to begin with, I was able to gauge just how much I could have on. I ended up with 1 just to be safe… but I don’t understand why a lot of people feel it is necessary to come there with all the poofers, ao’s, etc. I’m just waiting for all the greifing to start, with this ability, because lord knows I was ready to go off on a few people yesterday for being so inconsiderate….
I agree it was a tough ride round the hair fair, but i found once id de-primed (i was bad and forgot) and sat on a cube to move round i had little issues. I am running on a brand new mac so i think that helped. When i still had an old computer id just wait a few days before i went. I know some people dont like that solution but its does make it easier.

ALL popular sims are lagged out by having a lot of other avitars on them. Static prims are never the issue. A naked avitar is the most complex object you have to render in SL, if there are 50 of them around, Lag.

I deprimed, got naked and made a skin out of hair texture…lol. Sat on a cube and edited myself around. Only problem was at sim borders waiting until there was space for my avatar. Now I need to go through all the demos and go back to buy what I want.

Well, I do enjoy Hair Fair, that’s why I went this morning – and will probably go again later tonight. Washu and Sasy, thanks to both of you for the clarification. The build itself was great, the layout was awesome – it was the personal frivolity that drove me up the wall. Being bald and primless didn’t seem to cut it.
Of course, I fully agree that the blingtard, primful newbies don’t help in any manner. You’d think the greeters standing at each TP point would get the point across. “PLEASE DE-PRIM AND TAKE OFF YOUR HUDs and AOs!” Sigh.

I went and got lagged even though i was hairless, no attachments and in a tank top and shorts, no huds at all. I respect what the hair fair *is* doing but I have to admit, all the displays and extra prims were making it harder to get around….and I left without even a demo or a hair, or anything bought. Ah well.
I liked the build a lot but I wasn’t totally crazy about the layout. I got confused as to what was where.

Go figure, the lack of Elika, Starley, and Canimal are causing a ruckus. I did notice they were not there, and while they are missing Hair Fair is carrying on just fine.
FYI: for those who can’t handle the lag there are tons of Hair Fair ’08 demos on OnRez. You can stay in the lag-free atmosphere of another sim and try on demos until you have a sensory overload.
I gave up on trying to get to the Aitui booth and hooked myself up with OnRez. Having the demos downloadable is a great idea.
In future it would be great if estate managers could put an ARC limit on those teleporting into large-scale event sims, so, attendees like this would be met with a message like: Your avatar rendering cost exceeds the allowed limit into this location. Please remove your attachments and try again.
I doubt anyone’s weeping over my lack of involvement in hairfair.. I suck at hair. but ya know people can feel free to insult me anyway cos i’m just such a horrible person for not spending hours making something no one would want
Sadly, I have not been to the Hair Fair as of yet. Why? As a certifiable Hair Addict (Over 700 Styles) it is not because I don’t want more, frankly, I want it ALL! My computer is a disaster as it is. I take about 20 mins to rez everything (from grey) in a crowded area, and that is when there is nothing else running on my PC. My graphics card cannot deal well with sculpties, they take up to 10 minutes to load, and that is with just a few, nevermind hundreds.
I want to go, but I am limited on time, and simply cannot dedicate 20 hours to surfing on a cube primless thru endless lag while awaiting rez. I feel bad for those vendors and consumers who have made a serious effort to reduce the size of the images on their vendors (smaller size, faster rez) and stayed away from sculpties and fancy polygons is theit builds. I understand wanting to have a memorable booth, but what I will remember it the hair, not the re-staging of The Lion King, even if it really looks awesome.
I don’t mean to single out anyone here, but your vendors will rez for me about 10 minutes before you sculptie decorations, the physics of sculpties being what they are, they mainly look like blobs and obstruct clear view of the vendors for me. I want to be charitiable, I spend up to 10,000L at these fairs without a second thought, usually buying eveything on a charity vendor and then some, but it is just unfortunate that all the lag is being blamed on the Bling and the High Rendering costs of other avatars, when I never zero in on them, I cam directly in on a wall of vendors and wait for rez.
I will be going to hair fair this week, I hope, should RL issues settle down (gaaahhhh I hate moving!), but I will do it in the middle of the night, and I will do it almost entirely primless sitting on a box, and I know it is going to be difficult. The lag won’t stop me from going entirely, but may prevent me from seeing it all.
I think it is unfortunate that in an attempt to beautify your booth at the fair, you may actually contribute to an inability of buyers to see your product, and then not only does the vendor lose, the hair fair and Locks of Love loses, and so do all the organizers who worked tirelessly to bring this event together. This is undoubtedly unintentional, but still a fact.
I don’t know that Tenshi’s post was mean, it was perhaps the first to highlight some of the concerns many may have but have yet to address. I was unable to make the invite only preview (I was DJing) so I was not there before the crowds buying up hair and freebies at record speeds. I imagine the lag that night was minimal if any, so most blog posts that are glowingly positive might be attributed to the conditions that the individuals were under whn they visited.
Hope to get my fix of hair soon, Tenshi’s post might not be gushingly positive, but it does bring to light issues we all need to be aware of as far as it concerns the guidelines for vendors at the events as well as the visitors.

Why is it that when creators take a break for RL or simply SL burnout, or a lack of creative energy, do they get bashed with the naughty stick. Not everyone continues to be enchanted with SL endlessly, and non-participation does not signal not caring about the cause (Locks of Love) or their customers.

I find if I go into Advanced and turn off EVERYTHING! Sky, ground, water, shadows, fog, clouds, particles, avs.. It’s not too bad!
Since there are teleport areas at the Hair Fair, I don’t think it would be a bad idea TO eject people for having too high of ARC. I’ve seen people pop in with something like.. 10000. that’s just TOO high for that many avs on a sim. As long as most of the advertising for the event said something like… “we’re gonna boot your ass if you are above such and such ARC” but nicer, I don’t think people would have a prob with it

I rekon a really good way to take lag wpould be to provide people with a black body suit so all you can see is there face

I’m always baffled as to why, when the laws of physics and gravity mean nothing, and when we’re limited only by the strength of our imaginations, why everything fashion related needs to recreate a real life environment – fashion parades, booths, even changing rooms. Surely there’s a better way?

HoH is noticably up in arms that I “trashed” their booth when, and you can quote me above, I said it was very nice but the prims left one with many issues navigating past the booth. STOP THE TERRORISM OF TENSHI VIELLE!!!

You DID trash our booth…no seriously, you did. “I have to call this one an Epic Fail” That is trashing our booth. You are the most hateful and spiteful person I have ever encountered in SL or RL. I do hate and I do despise you…and with damned good reason. Your blog is garbage your stories are lies and your soul is full of hate. Excuse me if I don’t look past that. There are a few designers that we looked into, aka researched (try that some time), that were over their prim limits and were using many scripted items other than the allowed Split Script that donates to Locks of Love. On top of that you have folks all over the place in SCULPTED shoes and clothing, that far outnumber the few sculpty pieces in our display, scripted attachments and overly primmy hair for such a busy sim. I don’t think these shoppers deserve your criticism nor do the designers who have clearly overstepped their prim and script limits. Bring that up to the organizers privately if you have an issue and stop putting a smudge of dirt on this great and charitable event. Once and for all please step up to the plate, stop being so vindictive and say “I was wrong. I attacked HoH for personal reasons and not for anything legit. They did nothing wrong.”
It’s easy to stand back and critique an event but I am of the opinion that a lot of people put a lot of work into this and the fact that money goes to such a worthy charity is what matters to me most.
Yeah it was laggy and I tried not to add to it but I thought it was wonderful. So to the organisers and every vendor there, GREAT JOB. I loved it and appreciate your efforts.
Like most things, this is a learning experience and I’m sure improvements will be made each year. There are some people who will never be satisfied no matter what you do but I am sure the charity will be very grateful to receive the money raised.
I happen to be enjoying the fair myself but was disappointed with 2 of the booths because I really looked forward to their releases. One has what looks like the same hair from last year’s hair fair and the other looks like she just renamed some of her styles and put them up. Maybe she tweaked a few prims here and there but they really look the same. These 2 stores are among my favorites so it was a real let down. Other than that, everything looks wonderful. I discovered quite a few new places I didn’t know about like Denier Cri and Miss B.
It’s clear that a lot of work has gone into the planning of this event to try to minimise lag. I found it much easier to move around than last year, and it took less time to get into the sims as well (no more than a few attempts). Walking was a little painful at times but that’s only to be expected at an event of this size, and the ability to move around using prims compensated for that. I noticed that most of the larger booths using more prims were placed in smaller numbers in the centre of the sims, very smart move.
Well done to the organisers and all of the designers, and thank you for providing this event for the community as well as for Locks of Love. Many of us have been looking forward to Hair Fair for ages and I certainly wasn’t disappointed.
The Hair Fair was great, better than last year’s, mainly because I didn’t fall down between sims, and also I have had a pc upgrade so was able to enjoy it more.
The creativity of people is something I thoroughly enjoy seeing, whether it is a builders work or designers of clothing and hair, and this year’s fair was no exception. Yes I suffered the effects of lag, but i knew beforehand this would happen. There’s no point bleating about lag, we all know about it and have our own ways to deal with it.
Because booth designers had put so much effort into creating their booth design, I tried where I could to wait for them to rezz, patience is a nifty thing at times.
I am also fortunate to live in a time zone that is remote from both Europe and the US, so crowds are generally quite thinned by the time I log in to SL, giving me the opportunity to visit with lesser numbers in the sims.
Overall, a wonderful experience, I look forward to next year’s event!
I have a cheap laptop that I’ve used since I started SL. I went into Hair Fair with a ARC of 1 and could fly around rather easy. I saw a lot of ppl sitting on cubes and wondered if I should try, but I didn’t bother since I managed well.
So I don’t have a “gamer” pc, but the opposite.
I actually had much more trouble with crashes and lag before Christmas 2007. Yes, I think there’s been put in a lot of work to reduce lag.
That designers work to make their booths look pretty within their prim number can’t be wrong.
I finally made it through the rest of the booths and I found maybe four that were choking on the prim usage. Overall, though, Hair Fair is always fun… just completely lag-filled.
I was the only one around last night that DIDN’T seem to be wearing prim hair, prim shoes and prim attachments. Why can’t people listen?
I went to the hair fair on the first day, with all the staff shouting for people to remove all their attachements, most of which was ignored
I asked why they were not booting these people, and was told that because its a charity thing, they dont want to upset people
How is the charity going to make a lot of money when it takes you half an hour to reach a booth then another 20 minutes to rezz just one demo?
I finally made it into the hair fair on Sunday and although my own personal FPS was great, the sim stats sucked rocks. to be expected to some degree and it depended on which one of the two I was in. Pink being the worse if I remember right.
A different blog helped me figure out some client versus server issues but I think for anything this big, working to maintain decent stats for both sides should be the key element of the build and participants.
Love the idea of giving away a free skin on 512 textures that is just black or white or even any color. That would be a hoot to walk around in and see the sim filled with. Anyone not wearing it..bye bye.
I also like the idea of the venders being able to place the locks of love donation vender in their own store as well as at the hair fair. I understand the reasoning of not allowing this, you want people at the fair. But it is a charity event and the goal should be to raise money in any way feasible. Many just can’t get to all the venders or even to one because of older systems, etc. This gives them the chance of going to the store to buy.
Although the build was great, I do think a bit more standarizing (word!) should come in, as “boring” as it is to see “mall type builds” that are not unique to the vender, it would allow people to see more, buy more and experience more. Figure there is about 40,000 active members in SL and many of them want to get in. (that’s my pathetic alotment for bots, my numbers are way off I am sure).
I, and so many others are there for the hair, the donations, the freebies, the landmarks, to find new designers we never heard of, etc. We aren’t there for exciting builds. I save the exciting build “ooh’ing and aww’ing” for the actual store.

Are popular sims laggy? if your computer sucks does SL suck more. Well Duh. Oh did we mention that there are options like going to onrez and getting the hair from there? Yep. A TON of work goes into large projects like this useing it to lay into people you don’t like is shamefull. FFS lose the default texture from your bloody subscribeomatic, Mr Perfection pants. And the hell is the deal with posting as Admin, I can’t tell if you are trying to be scary or what, just pathetic tenshi, realy.

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Okay, I’m sure at some point someone probably mentioned to those complaining about lag that much of it’s client side, right? That means you can ARC each others’ little avatar hearts out and bitch about blingtards all you want, but the biggest thing to reduce lag that you can do is lower your OWN graphic settings. Bling can be turned off. Level of detail of prims can be turned off, you can render distant avs as blobs so’s to not have to worry that OMG THEY HAVE PRIM HAIR ON HOW DARE THEY.
Listening scripts (anything that responds to a chat command) DO contribute to lag, so yeah take your AO’s off, your colour-change shoes, etc. But complaining about OTHER people’s contribution to lag which you can at least PARTLY reduce yourself is just being ignorant. You can scream at other people for wearing prims all you want, until you turn off your Windlight sky you’ll still be lagged to hell at an event.
Sculpties don’t seem to contribute much to lag, if they don’t render, they simply don’t render and stay as spheres.

And Darkly, sorry but no. Its laggy there because the fair is doing well Very well from what I have heard. I was able to hit all 4 sims Sunday around noon, no problem, was it laggy, you bet, but no worse than any other popular place. Everyone involved has done a fine job with this event given the limitations of SL. If your computer suxs that bad, hit OnRez.

Honestly, I think one of the points is that everyone needs to work TOGETHER to make an event such as this as lag free as possible. Not just the event creators or just the people attending.
Everyone has their parts to do. For the record, I did have my settings down as far as I could get them and sim stats were still only 1-10 FPS although my own personal settings were ranging around 20ish..give or take.
As to what directly caused the sim stats to drop for me? No clue. I did what *I* could to help myself and others. Be nice if everyone or at least the vast majority did, especially for a charity event.
I hear ya, Lauren. I’m on a laptop that can’t do Windlight’s skies… my second computer is older and gets a frame rate of (I’m not kidding) 0.3 fps with everything enabled. 0.3!!
I kinda wish we could pre-configure graphics settings the way we can skies and lighting now, so I could just select an “event” setting from a drop down menu, and another with everything on for photos… *runs to the jira*

Tenshi, this is clearly your Blog and as you have said time and time again, you can write what you like.

The lag at the Hair Fair did not stop me from buying – quite a lot. And for once, it was nice to know that my ridiculous overspending in SL will partially go to a great cause.
Most importantly: it was a sobering reminder that many people have far greater things to worry about than lag.
What questions? There are no questions. I said although the booth was nice, it was epic fail in terms of lag contribution and number of prims. There were several of this nature but those were the first two I found.
The lag at hair fair didn’t stop me from purchasing, either. I still managed to make my rounds. Slogging past some of those booths though, were a great annoyance and they were booths I skipped over.

i saw lots of prims but i also saw lots of empty space for me to fly around through…
let me also mention i love locks of love and although i didnt buy any hair at hair fair (i didnt have time to go through all the sims/rezz everything blah blah) i still donated money and i have cut my hair 3 times and donated it in real life so DO NOT claim i knooothw nothing about the charity
when i first came to the sims… it took me awhile to actually find the damn booths… perhaps it was the sim i chose to land in i must admit i didnt even know about hair fair except for tenshi’s post yesterday
GUESS what people can bitch about prim usage at a charity event… they arnt bitching about the charity its being donated to… they arnt saying dont go to hair fair… its a horrible place… they are just saying gooooddd its going to be laggy… or wow they should have thought this out better

I found it very laggy, even with my avatar wearing non-prim clothing and low-prim hair. However, it was easier to navigate sitting on a box, but then there were a lot of boxes around people had just dumped.
Although the build was ok it was hard to find the booths and all the pyramids and fountains were unnecessary I thought.
Great event though and I am glad I struggles through the lag. I was disappointed with how few of the styles available for sale at the show were actually donating to Locks of Love, and how little product there was in general.
I would have spent more if there had been more product available, and if more than one style or two were actually benefitting the charity.
It really annoys the hell out of me that people don’t dial down their prim count before going to places like the hairfair. I used Avatar Rendering Cost thing to make sure I was still in the green before going in and I was appalled at all the people with prim counts in bright red walking around. There’s a thing called courtesy. It would be nice if people had it.
I haven’t been to the hair fair yet (waiting for it to settle down) but i had no idea about all of this stuff. Maybe some of the vendors were not told to keep it low? (If that were a rule then it was not policed well). Maybe there should be more of a focus on how frowned upon it is to go there with AOs on and all decked out. What if the sim owner checked “no object entry” would that mean no one could wear attachments?
y do huge organizations (with a z) think they’re cool just because they are large? “Rezzable runs the largest public space in the metaverse.” BFD. Who cares? Is size a value that is supposed to attract people? Hah – what MAN thought that up? That in itself is the kiss of death for most modern consumers. Corporations are intrinsically blind to themselves. Massive size means lack of distinguishing character, it means homogenization, it means monotonous sameness and groupthink. It means more for the corporation, less for you the consumer. Hugeness means insensitivity, lack of concern for individuals. It means those who really care will try to avoid them like the plague, because their enormity buries creativity with the weight of it’s super self-consciousness. Especially in SL, where more than 40 avatars in one place makes a sim Lag City, who needs big? Rezzable – go beach yourself somewhere and die, whale-azz.
just came back from hair fair. that experience really s**ked. when i could move around, very few images rezzed. could not get demos to work. it’s huge and ugly and desolate. sweet idea for charity, totally naive on the prim usage, tho. they’ll figure it out. maybe.
