No, we need MORE hunts so that people don’t have to buy anything and can fill their inventories with ugly crap!

Hunts drive me crazy. But they draw people to stores they may have never gone to so they may be a brilliant marketing plan!

    2. Time to move on.

    3. I’m thinking of becoming an SL lawyer just for sh*ts and giggles.

    4. Wow aren’t you proud of yourself.

    5. I’m not one to complain about free stuff even if it is crappy. If you don’t like the hunts don’t do them.

    6. Aww such is fake Second Life love.

    #5- HEAR FUCKING HEAR

Jesus christ, you might know me if ONLY for the hunt list on my blog. Go check that sucker out right now, look at how long it is. I update it on sundays, meaning I weed out old hunts since i add hunts as I find them through the week(as of 9:43am it has been updated but it will be getting updated sometime today). Obviously last week I didn’t add cause I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. That means one week ago, there were FIFTY SEVEN hunts going on. I’m sure that’s not all of them, I do my best, but when there are THAT many, I know I’m missing a few. Still though, GIVE US A BREAK.

    #3 – Hehhee. Love it.

    #5 – Amen!!
Soon buying stuff will be a thing of the past and a lot of talented designers will be hurting. Where is the incentive to create when no one will buy what you make because others are giving everything away for free? Why shouldn’t our talented Designers be paid like everyone else who works at something? Not doing hunts isn’t really the answer. They are hurting the real time income for a lot of people who depend on that money to pay bills, feed families, etc. Enough is enough is enough.

#1 discovered a new photoshop filter but couldn’t think of a secret to go with it?

#3: I know an SL lawyer, but she specialises in fake divorces. Someone’s got to decide who gets custody of the prim baby, you know? (She also offers pre-nups)

#5: THIS. Come on designers, you’re supposed to be CREATIVE, is it truly beyond you to come up with new and original ways of improving your traffic?

#5 comments above – The idiots are those who RELY upon income from SL to make ends meet. Anyone who creates on SL and doesn’t accept the fact that the cash cow could dry up TOMORROW needs some serious help. SL is a game. It is not Serious Business.

    #3 Teehee.. love that!

#5 It eludes me why people are doing hunts, or are actively searching for freebies – it’s such a waste of time for so little benefit. A few days ago I was at Tesla, and some guy asked me where the freebies are (duh, as if they were hidden..). I asked him whether, when going to the movie theatre, he would ask “where can I view the free crap movies?”. He actually thought I was joking. Must have been a WoW player who expects to get gold or XP points for collecting freebies.

Ok.. some stores may put out actually nice freebies. But it’s still a waste of time to wait for a lucky letter, unless you’re a sad creature having nothing else to do.

#4 “I worry more about your business than my own” Lets see how that works out for you…
#5 Give me a break, SO DON’T GO TO THEM!!! They are a marketing tool just like lucky chairs, mob vendors, and group gifts, and they all work.

@YouRKidding: So clue us in to what cash cow you RELY on that will never dry up. “Real” jobs end at the drop of a hat too.

  17. Isara Beaumont

    Dec 28th, 2008

@YouRKidding: anyone who does business anywhere has to accept the fact that tomorrow sales could dry up for plenty of reasons. Using this as an argument against SL as business environment is unreasonable.

I love hunts but I don’t do all of them. I cut back because my inventory was over flowing. And even if I do go on a hunt I don’t pick up everything. But I still like to go hunting for things and looking for them.

A lot of the hunt stuff is really nice and sometimes I find new shops or designers that I had no idea about and then go back and spend actual money there.

If you don’t like hunts or lucky chairs of free items don’t get them. But don’t think that the people who do those things are spending money in SL. I know a lot of people who spend lots of money who do hunts and lucky chairs.

I really like the imagery and type in #6. It’s a sad little note, but it’s well-executed.

I never have time to do hunts (I’m never in-world anyway). Some people like them, some hate them. Some avatars go, collect their freebie, never come back. A rare handful come back to the store and shop if they like the freebie. I don’t think it’s really effective marketing anymore, though. I’d also rather see them run longer, have better items, and be more like a treasure hunt… like the Mata Hari puzzle by Random Calliope.

I love hunts! I spend tons of linden in SL and it’s nice from time to time to get freebies. Sure, not all of them are great but finding those few great gems are so worth it, especially if it’s at a store you already love. And yes I have also met some really nice and helpful people on my hunts.

To insult someone who is looking for freebies or likes to hunt is just shocking to me. Some people need to get over themselves. If you don’t like them don’t do them, and if you don’t want to help the person in the store who asks where the freebies are say nothing at all. No need to be rude.

    YouRKidding has a point.

Let’s be serious here. People will always need to food to eat and clothes to cover their bodies. The world as we know it is a reality save some dooms day possiblity of destruction.

If Linden Labs went bankrupt tomorrow then what? This isn’t real!!! If you’re making a living off of SL then great I’m not knocking that. Just don’t make it seem like this is reality and try to tie this to losing a job in real life it’s not the same.

i love good freebies, and i enjoy a good hunt. if you don’t like hunts, then the simple answer is…don’t do them. i have found TONS of great stores where i spend money and never would have found, if not for the hunt. the competition in sl is fierce for designers, and i think any way they can get their brand out there is good.

there are many people in sl who try to budget their spending (good lord things add up here). if you were to buy one skin, two hairs, and three outfits (clothes, shoes, and accessories) per month you could easily drop $5000L ($19USD). and in the end we are buying pixels that could disappear tomorrow. if a designer wants to offer free things to reward customers or to increase business, i’m all for it.

Re: “Making a living in SL”

    Ummmm *looks around the room*……..

YouRKidding has a point but only to a degree. I think for it to make sense we need to break peopple up into groups. According to the SL economy stats page (located here: http://secondlife.com/whatis/economy_stats.php ) the number of people bringing in over $5,000 USD a month has declined. So has the number of people making $2-5K USD/month.

$5K is a nice figure. You can live comfortable AND save money for “emergencies”. How someone making over $5k is an “idiot”, as YourKidding refers to them as, is beyond me. Assuming they are putting money away to cater to the possibility of SL shutting down with no warning, there is absolutely nothing wrong with making SL your main source of income.

HOWEVER, there are other individuals who are scraping beneath their couch coushins to make ends meet and they REFUSE to turn off the computer and try to find a real life job. These people I worry about. As with any job, RL or SL, hard times come around, now is a time where businesses (Rl and SL alike) are experiencing a monetary low. But if someone is relying so heavily on SL income when their business is shit, that is worrisome to me. I personally know a handful of people who do not make much money in SL yet they continue to refuse to find a stable RL job and log on every day to complain about how they have no money. They think because they made $70 usd one day they can count on their SL store to be there for them. Wrong.

Theres a correct and incorrect way to do things. ANY job can go down. If someone is infact bringing in a nice figure and is being logical about their spending habits in RL, whats the issue? There isnt one. They are more than likely making way more money than they would be at a “regular RL job” which really arent oh so stable, are they? Are you aware that right now our nation (USA that is) has the highest unemployment count as its had in ..what was it…16 years or so?

YouRKidding, I used to work at a huge corporation. In fact one of the biggest in the world. I left a couple years ago because it was just painful going in every morning and watching executives eat one another alive and sell their mom down river for a bonus. In the last 2 years , I have watched them let go an amazing amount of their workforce, alot of my friends who remained there are now jobless. Making a living in Second Life is like making a living anywhere else, there will always be uncertainty and instability.

The best part of working in here is the amazing amount of freedom it gives you. Waking up everyday and creating things you love, I would take that any day over an irritating boss, ridiculous goal setting from greedy out of touch executives, rush hour traffic and all the special “joys” that can be found in the 9-5 grind.
Don’t offend the people in second life who have figured out a way to make a living in here.

#1 Ewwwww! So fake and UGLY!

#2 Sorry to hear that, someone out there must be ignorance! Time for you to move on. Find a better friend(s) that will always stick with you forever.

#5 Then don’t hunt! I do hunt but I like lucky chairs better because you can able to chat and making friends while waiting for the right letters. So much fun!

#6 EW! Buy yourself a dildo that will makes you smile but please do not show your ugliest orange skin colored naked in front of us ever again!

    1) Wow, the stiletto was sharp enough on that one it missed the bulk of its target. Me-OW.

    2) Do yourself a favor and delete the chat logs. Move on. You’re in obsession mode, and you could be doing so much more with your life.

    3) I agree with the person who said that comparing her to the Wicked Witch of the West was a bit insulting to Elphaba, but other than that, SNERK!

    4) Enjoy the DMCA in your future if the infringement is sufficiently large enough.

    5) So stop doing them. I’m becoming much pickier about the ones I do and my inventory’s much healthier for it. It also means I am able to buy from the people doing them with less worry and more time.

    6) I wouldn’t call SL love automatically fake, but I’d suggest you find someone who means it the way you do. I think you got picked up by a SLothario.

I still love hunts though. And I DO end up buying things from stores with nice things. I’d love to see more gadgets and gizmos on these hunts, i.e. SteamPunky, or Futuristic shiny things. :D

    Dec 30th, 2008

you know I think a lot of people are misinterpreting #5. I don’t think they are saying they don’t like hunts. What I think they are saying is there are SO many of them, especially during the holiday season. Its more of a “give us a break” as opposed to “stop doing them entirely”. And yes, not all of them are worth doing or will get done, but if you like hunts when there are so many you want to do with designers you love, then it gets overwhelming.

“Freebie Hoarder”s aren’t the only people who do hunts. I know a LOT of people who drop a LOT of cash on SL, who LIVE for hunts. Before the holiday season really kicked in with the masses over Halloween hunts, then Thanksgiving hunts and Christmas hunts, I lived for hunts, and I dropped plenty of L inworld. At this point, and maybe its because of the fact that I have to pay so much attention to hunts, I’m just worn down and need a break.

I’d personally like to see a shift to smaller hunts with better prizes. Two or Three items to be found that are really nice as opposed to 50 okay prizes. Make them hard to find, that’s cool, make the hunt process a challenge, I’m down. I just get tired of wasting my time on a hunt with a pile of DCS fangs and freebies from biabes. I’ve become a lot more shrewd in my hunts since I started SL, but it makes me sad for the other people who do those hunts.

  35. Wow.
